For the first time since I was married, almost seven years ago, I was at home for Thanksgiving dinner. Aside from the first year that bp and I were married (when we flew out to have Thanksgiving with his family) I have worked the holidays shift at my job and missed out on dinner. That's not to say that I have never cooked the dinner, it just usually ended up being done cooking after I had already left for work.
This year was different for a couple of reasons.
I have been part time since the baby was born last year (even though I still worked the holiday last year). So they decided this year that a part time person shouldn't work holidays (holiday pay, days off and all of that fun stuff).
Second, someone else actually volunteered to work it. Of course this was in exchange for a three day weekend. As a reward for my years of service, I'm working solo today and actually doing an 8 hour shift.
Third, the kids are getting old enough for it to actually matter if I'm home or not. I think this if the first real Thanksgiving dinner that K has had in her 6 years of existence. She did great, even had seconds on pie. A, after having been woken up from a late nap induced by a long morning at friends and relatives, took after his father and really only wanted the apple pie.
It turned out to be a nice holiday. Breakfast with the family was uneventful, which is good for my family. A was fairly well behaved for the whole day. The turkey was done in a timely manner (6pm is pretty good). Nothing was burnt, spilled or spoiled. I have a lot of things to be thankful for and number one this year was being with my family.
