in between working on my dragon*con costume and working on my novel (and just working), i managed to work in a little bit of free time, and i used that free time to watch star trek: TNG. i got so into it that i actually had a vivid TNG/angel crossover dream involving the holodeck... it was weird. anyway, ever since i taught myself crochet back in like february, i've had trouble just watching tv without doing something with my hands. so i decided to crochet a tng character while i watched tng. and since brent spiner is coming to dragon*con, it made sense for me to crochet his character, data. this is data:
so, improvising on a design similar to what i came up with for [
castiel the yarngel] and [
colonel yarn sheppard], i finished off my tng marathon the other day with:
data the yarndroid.
i am especially proud of the way data's hair turned out. it took me a really long time to do it because i had to stitch each hair individually. since he's an android, his hair is almost never messed up, so it all had to be really neat - not like castiel and sheppard, who have somewhat messy hair (especially sheppard) or at least hair that doesn't matter if it's messy. in this picture, you can also see the three pips on his uniform that denote his rank as lieutenant commander. one of the pips should have a black center, but they are too small for me to show that in yarn.
here is data from the back. you can see how neat his hair is. you can also see the seam in the back of the uniform. i could have avoided that by joining each row, but it's generally quicker to crochet in a spiral rather than rows when you make toys, and it's also considered more traditional.
data's stand-up collar was pretty annoying to figure out how to design (especially on this itty bitty scale), and so were the stripes that go up his sides. because he's made in a spiral, the stripes want to be diagonal. bleh. also, his communicator badge doesn't show up well in the pictures, but it looks better in person because it's shiny. his butt sticks out when he's standing up... his body looks more like riker than data, heh.
awwww cutest little android ever. :D
BFF! i'm glad i made sheppard first because he can handle being alone, but i think data would have gotten lonely. this way, he has a built-in friend to study and imitate. i would've introduced him to castiel too, but cas can't exactly stand up, and it would've been weird for him to just be lying there... i'm actually making another castiel doll who will be able to stand with sheppard and data. :)
data the yarndroid was constructed with red heart super saver yarn and a size G crochet hook, except for his eyes, which were made with caron simply soft yarn and a size F hook. he was stuffed with polyfil and unpopped popcorn kernels.
i am planning to give the data doll to brent spiner at dragon*con, and to give misha collins the soon-to-be-completed better!castiel doll at d*c as well, but i just found out yesterday that joe flanigan canceled his d*c appearance this year. :( i am very sad about this - david hewlett did the same thing to me last year, damn him - but at least i get to keep my yarn sheppard doll a little longer. it'll give me time to make the rest of the sga team and do a photo shoot with them. heh.
