On Monday, I went to happy hour and they didn't charge me for all the items so I left a 400 percent tip, which is pretty common if you have a rapport with happy hour staff. But after a few days of the charge being pending without tip on my bank account, it disappeared entirely. I was really worried that they might have lost their copy of the receipt so I planned to go way out of my way and maybe pick up a lunch there so I could ask about it and pay them if they had, indeed, lost it.
But then the charge showed up in my account all settled up. But I really would have gone and paid them, because it was a cool happy hour and I want to go back again and again.
If I find cash on the ground I'll keep it, but I don't accept rewards if I find a purse or wallet, and I always pay even if my tab is somehow overlooked.
when i worked as a waitress, occasionally i would remember the next day or later that night that i had forgotten to charge a customer for something. only ONE TIME in a year of working there did a person tell me that i had forgotten to charge them for an item. a couple of times i had people walk out on their bill entirely - i even caught someone in the act and forced them to go up to the cashier and pay.
for that one person who will tell you when you've missed something on their bill there are twenty others who will keep their mouths shut.
I had this happen to me at Waffle House on Friday. The waitress forgot to add my coffee to the bill so I had them add it on at the register. They were crazy busy that night.
Kev and I went to Costco once and walked out, and realized they hadn't charged us for one of our items. So we went back to the customer service desk and tried to pay.
They actually ARGUED with us, saying that there was no way we got out without paying. :) They eventually took the money though.
