Canada Day
Challenge #2: the pictures you never took but always see, from intoevenings, 310 words, G

It isn't everyday that you have a fireworks display right over your head in a National Park.

Millions of stars are twinkling in the night sky- a rare sight for a girl who lives in the city.  She imagines climbing the mountains that surround her to grab a star; surely she could reach them from way up there.  A quiet whistling brings the girl back to the grassy hill she is sprawled on.  Before she can trace the noise, there is an explosion of light and sound.

Good, she thinks.  It's finally starting.

Laying back on the grass, she settles in to enjoy the show.  It isn't everyday that you have a fireworks display right over your head in a National Park.  The sounds and colours come faster and louder.  Crack- red and green flames shoot out of one another, and quickly disappear.  Pop! A small white ball bursts into dozens of smaller spheres lined up in one big circle.  The magical designs become increasingly intricate, and with every spark that reaches the end of its fuse, the ground shakes.  The girl vaguely wonders if the animals in the park could every appreciate this beautiful display.  When the ground shakes again, she laughs at herself- the sound by itself would scare any bears or elk away.

The girl notices a burning smell, and is reminded of a time when she was young and couldn't stand the overpowering stench of fireworks.  Tonight, she breathes deep- she can't get enough.

As grand finale begins, the air is beginning to get hazy from the leftover smoke.  Some small, unknown objects begin to rain down upon her face.  Glee fills every corner of her body as she realizes she is getting hit by the ash leftover from each explosion.

At this moment she joins the fireworks exploding in the air, and leaves every concern behind on the grass as she rockets into the sky, escaping the world for just one night.
