Today, for the first time in what feels like forever, I feel like I read the paper and saw only good news. Obama is lengthening his lead over Clinton. Michael Bloomberg is committed to cutting carbon emissions in New York City by 30% by 2030, and is trying to convince the whole country to join him. The writer's strike is finally, officially, over.

As excited as I would be about any of these things individually, they all pale in comparison to Kevin Rudd's apology to the stolen generations. It really was a momentous day for the country. Today, I felt proud to be an Australian, as I have not for a very long time, if ever. Watching the country united - young and old, black and white - in support of the apology was just amazing. As corny as it may sound, it boosted my faith in human beings. And it took me back to a time of political heroes, who stood for change, for unity and for hope, and inspired generations to put their idealism into practice.

After Rudd's speech, when the importance of what I had just witnessed was beginning to sink in, two lines of one of my favourite songs started ringing through my head.

A thrill of hope, the weary world rejoices
For yonder breaks a new and glorious morn.

As Rudd said, it is only by accepting the past that we can move on, united as one, to the future. Here's to a new dawn.
