i went to volunteer at the food bank today. i feel good about it. i had to wake up early, stopped and got some coffee... got lost on my way to the food bank, and then found it. there were three other people waiting outside the front door... it didn't look very promising, until one of the lead volunteers showed us around to the back. there were probably 125 people volunteering, mostly with school groups or companies, but there were a bunch of us individuals, too. a lot of high schoolers were there, getting their requisite hours in. the individuals were shown into the 'salvage' room, where we sorted through safeway's leftovers, and salvaged what we could.... random food products... good spirits... nice people... i liked that cliche community feeling. everyone working together. it was good, and i'm glad that it's something i will be doing regularly.

the food bank is near my old, beloved neighborhood. i stopped by the main street of the neighborhood, and driving down that street, i had this feeling rather like i was at a festival - everything i saw flooded my memories... the place is full of good feelings for me, even though the time that i lived there was, in some ways, really hard. i saw my favorite restaurants, bookstores, boutiques, and stopped to have lunch at my favorite restaurant in the city. it's a nouveau mexican place. beautifully prepared food at cheap prices, and it's one of those order at the register places. they have so many excellent dishes. i used to live down the street from the place, so being back there felt so familiar. i used to go there with the staff from the children's museum all the time. we had all of our celebrations there. i didn't look at a menu, but went right to the cashier and told her i'd like a goat cheese quesadilla and some apple-cherry agua fresca, today's special... i sat on the bench and waited, and just basked in the glory of the familiar restaurant. i took my order out onto the patio, and yummed all over it while i read from my current novel-read.
