what a full day it's been! i woke up at a reasonable weekend time, decided to play on the internet for a while, then go to borders to redeem a free coffee from one of those frequent coffee cards.

so there i am, in borders, minding my own business, writing in my journal, casually watching the older gentleman nearby as he talks into his phone, as well as watching two women in their twenties studying russian, and a high schooler waiting for her beau... writing whatever comes to my mind...
yes?
"this is really incredible. can i ask about your hand? my sister has a hand just like yours..."
from birth?
"yes, from birth. wow, it's her right hand, too, just like you. do you know how this happened?"
i do. this is the name of what happened to me, when i was in the womb, in the amniotic sac, it's not a smooth surface in there, and i became banded when my right hand reached out... your sister, does her hand ever hurt? or not?
"no, it doesn't hurt." (i write down amniotic band syndrome on a napkin for him.) he touches my right hand, "oh, yours is smooth, the bones just stop. my sister's, the bones are a little different."
are they grafted?
"i don't understand. but the thing is, my sister, she's 45, she's had a very sad life. she's always hiding her hand behind her back. she's ashamed."
i'm sorry to hear that... some things are easy, some things are quite difficult [with this hand]. where are you from?
"i live here in silicon valley, but my sister still lives in jerusalem. i wish she could be here, to see you, writing and drinking your coffee, it's beautiful to see someone so capable...amazing, so confident. how long are you going to be here? i wonder, do you mind... maybe... can i take a picture?"
no, i wouldn't be comfortable with that. but i'll give you my email address. my name is shana.
"shana, my name is david. it's such a pleasure to meet you. i'm going to make sure my sister gets in touch with you."

after that experience, i finish writing in my journal, and then peruse a bit. go upstairs for music, but nothing catches my ears. wander around the graphic novels, and then go the magazine section... flip through a few culture magazines, and then check out a rabbit-care magazine. (paperdollhearts just got a new bunny, the most adorable little guy, and it makes me very much remember how much i want one, myself!)

then it was off to lakeshore, a learning/educational toys company with a store nearby. i got a really neat book, a pictoral dictionary almost, about children all over the world for my personal kids' book library, and some fun art supplies for the school.

came home, and checked out movie listings, decided to see '13 going on 30'. so silly, and so fun. also checked out the local spca bunny adoption pictures. so, so cute.

went to the coffeehouse to hear live music tonight. there was also an art opening going on, but the scene was kinda.. not cohesive. so, i ducked out (quack) a little early. now i'm here. ready for my sunday. :)
