It's finally here! I could tell today - on the way home from Fair Lakes, we were driving behind a beatup tow truck carrying a really beatup old van, and with the clouds, the wind, and these old dead leaves blowing around behind the truck as black birds circled overhead, I finally felt it creeping in. Fall!

My favorite season by far, is autumn. I LOVE the cooler weather, the change in leaves, scary October, cloudy days, football season, hockey kicking off, and anticipation of winter. One of the things I love most though is scary books!

I've gotten into the habit of searching for scary books in the fall. The fall of 2005, right before I got pregnant with Terran, I read House of Leaves by Mark Danielewski. It is by far the scariest book I've ever read, and I've searched for years for a scary book of that caliber. Fall 2006 was too busy to read and Fall 2007, I played a scary game on m&m.com - it was a painting and it had 50 different scences or things that played out titles of scary movies. I ended up reading the plot to many scary movies I hadn't heard of. Last year, when I was first pregnant with Blair, I read Dracula for the first time. I found it to be delightfully appropriate for fall, although it was not that scary to me. It was a great book, though. I also read Lost Boy, Lost Girl by Peter Straub and the followup - In the Night Room. Both were scary and disturbing or scarily disturbing, but ok books. Slightly too raw for me.

This year, I'm thinking about rereading Edgar Allen Poe's short stories, including the Cask of Amontillado, and Something Wicked This Way Comes by Ray Bradbury. However, I'm REALLY looking for something as scary as House of Leaves and in a similar tone. I don't think I'm ready to reread House of Leaves itself yet though. Not while I'm home alone so much.

Do any of you have scary book recommendations? I also like dystopias and sci-fi/fantasy, so if you know of scary ones in those categories, let me know. I do NOT like vivid descriptions of violence and gore, so please leave those recs out. Thank you!
