I've been a serious slacker the past couple days due to work.. working a 12 hour shift, no matter what time of day, is exhausting. I finished day 3/4 necessary to have my birthday weekend off.
Anyway, this weekend was really slow at work. We had a blizzard last night that caused roads to suck and school to be cancelled today. A couple more things happened, but I'm ready for sleep so those will have to wait for another day.. I just want to take some time to talk about one of the most frightening things that's ever happened to me.
Working in an ER, I definitely see my fair share of disgruntled patients. People get really angry about waits and pain meds, and I've answered a few threatening phone calls, but tonight we had a big scare.
I was returning to the desk from doing an EKG when I see everyone talking in a circle.. I wouldn't have thought anything of it, except Pringle chip was there, looking very serious. I find out the operator got a phone call with a bomb threat, called security, who then called us. As soon as the ER staff heard, everyone began freaking the F out. The police and bomb squad got called in.. no one could enter or leave the ER.. we had to go on diversion for internal disaster.. and they even made us walk around, looking for anything suspicious or out of the ordinary.
The whole time it was going on, I was freaking out, but so was everyone else. The operator traced the call to the OR, and after some investigation by Cathy, the house supervisor, we find out it was a false alarm. There was apparently an "unruly person" in OR 8 and somehow codes got mixed up and instead of a Dr. Quick, a code black got called. It took everyone a while to settle down, and after we did we laughed about it, but for that hour, I was scared shitless!
I'm happy to be in bed and ready to sleep!
