I read
baby_elvis's post yesterday and I want to stand in solidarity next to her and say, look at my user icon. That's me. This is what a feminist looks like.
I don't ascribe to any particular stream of feminist theory. I'm not a fantatical man-hating woman. In fact, hang around with me long enough and you'll find it's quite the opposite. I wax my legs and armpits and I love shoes. I wear skirts most of the time. I love jewellery and body care products. And coffee with my friends. I love to sew and knit and dance. I also love maths and science and reading and politics and art and music and literature and ...
I also believe that I should receive equal pay for equal work - I'm an engineer and I don't (more men in my particular place of work have permanent jobs than women, I have been on rolling contracts for the last 5 years with this employer even though it seems I'm the only person in state public service with this particular skill set).
I believe in freedom for choice and that I should have full freedom and control over the choices that I make for my life and for my body. And that you should have the same freedom of choices to make whatever decisions you feel are right for you.
I don't believe in gender role constructs that have different expectations for different people based on their genitals alone. Don't expect me to do the washing up, get the packages from reception or cook you a meal.
I don't believe men are better than women or that women are better than men. I think that everybody has something important to contribute to the world we live in and that it's vitally important that everyone be able to do so. And I will shout down or point and criticise anyone who thinks otherwise.
I am a woman and a feminist and am proud to be both.
