the north coast

still on the road ! i didn't think to mention this but for the last 2 months i've been driving around the country with a surfboard on the roof rack of my car. i found it on sale in virginia and couldn't pass it up since i've been borrowing other people's boards since i started and wanted to be able to surf everywhere i went down the coast, so i spent most of my food money on it, which worked out when i ended up living at the hostel for a while where they fed me for free.

anyway, last week i got to california and took route 1 up the coast from san luis obispo to san francisco. i saw some friends and crashed with some of my mom's best friends, who are amazing-- they used to live in seattle and i was best friends with their daughters, and now they have a giant old house in berkeley ('berserkley') with cats and books and old stuff all over it. after exploring the city and eating their food for a few days, i crossed the golden gate bridge and took 1 up the coast to bodega bay.

at the surf shop there i picked up a used wetsuit and stayed for a while to talk with the guys working there, and they invited me to surf with them a few miles up the coast once they closed the store. i surfed for a while and then went to a cookout in sonoma and crashed at the house of a super nice surf instructor who used to ride for rusty. my face got thrashed by the salt water and it was awesome to be in a house again and get to do all my girly beauty rituals. the next morning we went out to surf again, relaxed at a farmer's market and explored the sonoma coastline-- california is amazing because it has EVERYTHING and you can drive east from the coast for three minutes and suddenly be in midwestern cowland.

i stayed and surfed in bodega bay for four days, but i'm like ten years old and really anxious to leave summer camp and finally get home to my mom and my cats and super comfy bed, so yesterday i drove north from bodega and into the beautiful redwoods, where i'm typing next to a tree twice as wide as my car ! man.
