Vague handwaving in the direction of SPN 5.08 (maybe spoilers?)

Nov 07, 2009 00:56

Haven't had time to really read anyone else's reaction posts.  I have about ten of them open in tabs, but that's it.  The last couple of days were spent 12 hours at work, then up until 3AM logging mininanowrimo counts.  Can't imagine if I had actually tried to participate as well!  Anyway, I don't really have a bead on the fandom-at-large opinion, but for what it's worth, what I've got is behind the cut.

I'm of the personal opinion that Kripke has made it a personal goal to completely eliminate "crack" as a genre in Supernatural.  How does one do that, you might ask?  By making SHOW itself so damned cracked out that crack is now normal and therefore there is nowhere to go from CrackHead Street.  It's a two-lane highway with no intersecting roads, people.  It wraps around the Earth with no end.  [Especially after next week] Supernatural will just be one big Crack Equator.

Problem: (for me): I'm not really into crack.  I can be sucked in and momentarily charmed by a certain few people, most of whom are a) beloved, and b) on my flist, [you know who you are!]  But really?  An occasional, intermittent, single-ep suspension of belief is about all I'm wired to appreciate.  I can kick back and laugh with the best of them, but when crack becomes actual canon, I'm kinda phoning it in as the viewer.  I need my angst, my dysfunction.  Aside from actually dealing with that pesky apocalypse thingamajig, I want my folkloric/mythical/urban legend tie-ins that require Sam to expositionally recite THE LORE to Dean from his laptop while sitting on a crappy nylon bedspread.  I want them to rescue old ladies and kids.  I want Sam to admire Dean and Dean to adore Sam.

I'm warning you people, if this shit keeps up, Imma start writing deathfic just to Bring the Pain Back.

PS:  The Trickster was an awesome foil, funny and yet deadly enough to bring the drama.  No need to completely retcon him as an archangel.  Not on, Carver.

PPS:  Please to be continuing with your enjoyment of Show if that's your gig.  No shunning will result.
