How not to start the semester

Address an entire WS class as "chicks". As in, "Chicks, don't ask us dudes what we think about that stuff." In reference to a previous classmate asking for a warning if there would be any graphic material (Class is called Medicalization of Sex, so is possible) during the "ground rules" portion of the first class.

This is a 300-level class. In order to take it, you are definitely not a first year. And most likely have taken at least intro to women's studies. What were you doing in your previous schooling that it seemed like a good idea to address a room full of women as "chicks"?

...I have a feeling you were in the group where someone brought up that it's respectful to use the pronoun that someone has told you to, otherwise gender neutral would be okay.
...pretty sure the reason this irks me so much, aside from the chicks portion, is the assumption that it is okay to ask someone to be a representative for their sex/gender/race/orientation/whatever. If someone volunteers an experience, that's cool, but it's also just their experience. One person can't arbitralily speak for everyone, what makes you think that we're going to turn to you, Mr Dude, to speak on behalf of dudes everywhere? Are you pre-eminently qualified somehow? No? Didn't think so.

Other than that, good first class! Lots of familiar faces. Some friendly new ones. Prof seems super awesome, and has a great speaking voice. I'm pretty sure I could listen to her talk about anything.

psa, rant, school, book learnin'
