Aunt Dorothy

The last time I saw her was in 2005 while Jen and I were on our European Adventure. We started out in the UK staying with family, and one afternoon we went over to Aunt Dorothy's place with Auntie Margaret and Kevin. I drank flat fizzy lemonade, we all had a laugh over Aunt Dorothy's failing eyesight (recently Uncle Colin had been to visit and she hadn't recognized him until he spoke), and she showed off the plant that Dad had planted on her patio the last time he had visited (the previous year). Jen and I posed for a photo with her outside the front door.

When I was younger than that and over with the the whole family, Dad would point out his elementary school on the way to visit Aunt Dorothy. I think she had been a teacher at some point. Uncle Tom used to live a couple doors down from her. He died a couple years back. I only remember him a little. He always had funny socks on. Now I know that they were compression socks, cause he was often having problems with his diabetes. I would drink flat fizzy lemonade (Back then, they didn't have sprite/7up in the UK. The closest approximation was to ask for lemonade with lime in it. As a kid, I hated the lack of sprite/7up. Now, I hate the lack of fizzy lemonade in Canada). The family would pose for a photo outside the front door. Then we would be off to visit Uncle Tom down the street or Nana and Grandad around the corner and a couple streets down.

Sunday night Aunt Dorothy passed away. There's some sort of long explanation involving a benign tumour, but the short one is just that she was just getting old. I'm currently not very upset/distraught. It kind of feels like when Nana and Grandad passed... I'll miss her, and I'm sad she's gone, but I didn't really know her that well. I'll always remember the flat fizzy lemonade though. I'm pretty sure she just had the one bottle that she kept around for when us kids visited :)
