Meanwhile, back at the ranch...

I believe that a squirrel or other animal is stealing the chicken feed because there is no way that 5 chickens can eat that much every day --- is there? Perhaps the eat puts them on hunger overdrive. Everything in the garden is faring well, well, at least the plants that survived the chicken onslaught a couple of weeks ago. I've planted Nankeen and Natural Green cottons in the empty patches torn up by the wicked chickens.

Why, you may ask, am I growing cotton? Well, to be honest, during the week of TAKS, after the tests were over, the kids would watch movies and I would surf the internet. Your tax dollars at work! One day of that week, I was looking for some watermelon seeds of a specific type - moon and stars, a particularly nice variety that I wanted to grow this year. Well, I stumbled on the category of naturally colored cottons and got curious. I knew that all the farmland north of Austin is devoted to cotton and corn, and that the land that my house sits on very well could have been a cotton field about 60 years ago when our land was part of a family farm. So, I bought two seed packets of cotton, and they came with a very interesting history of cotton growing from the Civil War Era. So...I planted it several weeks ago. I now have 8 plants, 4 brown and 4 green. We'll see where this ends up.

Things to be Grateful for, 01.07.08
1. Harvesting your own veggies from the garden - tomatoes, beans, peppers, spinach, collard greens, cucumbers!
2. Going to Mexico to stay with our friend Mercedes for two weeks next Thursday/ Friday! Let's hope for smooth bus-ing on the way down this time. :)
3. The hall bathroom is almost finished, after many hours of work!
4. I have a good group of glorious friends that I am really thankful for. Somehow I ended up, after all the ups and downs and messes of my early twenties, with a really great husband and a great small group of friends.
5. Have I mentioned I'm still on summer vacation? :)
