I don't know if I wanted Katniss with Gale - though I did like that I could buy either Gale or Peeta as a plausible partner for her (leaving Mockingjay completely out of it). What I wanted was either Katniss to end up choosing to be by herself or her and Cinna finding each other.
I just finished Mockingjay about ten minutes ago. I was *so mad* that Katniss and Gale didn't end up together, if only because--as much as I like Peeta as a character--I am morally opposed to rewarding any of that "puppydogs after a girl without speaking to her for years" shit. The plot point that was why Katniss could not end up with Gale was enough of a thing I did not see coming that I bought it, but... yeah, it would have been nice for more of the plot to be driven by Katniss actually doing stuff, even if the big deep point of that particular book was supposed to be that becoming the symbol of the revolution actually curtailed her ability to do stuff. She still didn't need to spend like 85% of the book in the hospital
( ... )
Yeah, Peeta suffered from being Nice Guy and also I'm not a huge fan of the message that girls should be ok marrying someone who actively wants to kill them. Thanks Edward Cullen! Thanks Peeta!
The thing about Mockingjay is that it could have been such a cool book! If Katniss had done anything! Other than be in the hospital!

On the plus side, maybe the third movie will be more interesting than the third book is?

(Also, in my head, she and Gale totally go off and have crazy survivalist adventures forever. LALALALA--I can't hear you, canon!)

And then I was like, "Why the hell am I investing this much time in fixing someone else's book? I will write my own book."
