You & I would be kindred spirits. We would share baths, cigarettes, bottles of wine, friends, & lovers. You would braid my hair as I told you all my secrets. I would wear your dresses & use your mascara & dab fancy perfumes on the insides of my wrists. You would exude the perfect type of femininity for me emulate: sensual, subtle, effortless, confident. We would hang our laundry out to dry.

You would teach me things: how to speak a foreign language, how to properly care for lacy underwear, how to swim, how to make a good, stiff drink. We would dare each other to do risky things, but we would live our lives cautiously, consciously, quietly, gracefully.

I would let down the walls to let you in. We would be inseparable; identical but different.

We would share a rundown apartment in another country. There would be picnics in the middle of our living room, with candlelight & free-form jazz & cucumber sandwiches. We would play outside like children, running barefoot, pretending to be sisters or lovers or fairies. Time would stand still.

You would endure my mood swings & I would endure your flightiness. We would sleep in the same bed, cuddling amongst messy, dingy sheets, away from the ruckus of life, our bodies absorbing into the stillness of the night.

Our most intimate wires would be crossed, intertwined, becoming tangled as the years pass. There would be no you without me.

I will meet you in another lifetime, & you will be my best friend
