Gawain is out on the left side of the house with a whole lot of red string and some surveying tools, humming to himself.

He’s trying to figure out if there’s a good spot for an addition to the house before he broaches the topic of plans and materials for it with the rest of the household.

"What are you doing?" squinting at Gawain and his string, all.

"Surveying!" Gawain says, "We need more house. I think Clar'll run off to the woods to live with Heliabel if we're not careful."

"I told Lady Cywyllog I'd camp in the woods if there wasn't room. I've been doing it long enough before now."

Gawain grins. "That's good of you, but we do need more room."

"Anyway," he says, and suddenly looks giddy and shy, "At this rate Ragnelle might come looking for me, and you know what she'll say if we can't find a room to ourselves."

This look says, as clear as day, 'Oh, gawd'. "I know, I know. Besides, I don't think I could stand you two without a room."

Gawain smiles. "Funny, that's just what everyone else said, too."

"That's me, never original. Well, can I help?"

"I think it's more that we're predictable," Gawain says, and tosses the ball of string to him, underhanded, keeping ahold of the loose end so that the string ends up streched between them. "I'd love a hand. Hold that for me, please?"

He catches it neatly. "Holding. This makes a lot more sense than being a knight."

"Mmm," Gawain says, puttering about the business of manual surveying, about which his typist knows only small amounts, "I still don't understand that - there are other things for you to do, you know."

"That's right. I could be a monk."

"Or you could, hypothetically, come back home and give me a hand with the administration," Gawain says, wrapping the string around a stake, "Granted, you couldn't do that now, but you're fair and heaven knows Clar throws things at me when I offer to give her charge while I'm away."

"I wanted to. I told Lynet I'd ask you if I could. If we ever get home--"

Gawain smiles. "You're welcome to your place."

Quietly, "Thank you."

And a pause, and then, suddenly, "Mordred says I'm going to die."

"We all are," Gawain says flatly, because this is not something he wants to talk about.

And then, relenting. "I don't know. I don't remember either. Mordred only does because he has 'god cooties'. Clar's words."
