There's something else I want to write about here.
So, my work on the coloring book... It was a great opportunity and learning experience.. but I learned that simply drawing is NOT my cup of tea. I am a painter first and foremost. I need that multi-faceted tactile experience. Simply drawing is too... cerebral? It's not stimulating enough for me... or maybe it's just still too challenging. Figuring out watercolor was pretty easy because we deal with the properties of water every day. Drawing is really fucking hard.
The good part is... I got paid to make art and pretty meaningful art at that! That is the part of it that makes me feel happy about the work. Of course, now that it's over, I have transferred some of the drawings to my painting sketchbooks and had so much fun painting the women. I painted them all with red hair because I just wanted to imagine myself as all these different people at different stages in their life. One lady is old and painting, so her hair isn't red, but I like to think it's me when I'm old.
So anyways, about the project itself... That book, The Defining Decade was totally right on about loose connections being a great resource for opportunities. A woman who I'm friendly with but only recently met referred me to her boss who was looking for an artist to make a coloring book based on women in Lowell. Darcy loves my art and even bought a couple of paintings from me a few months ago.
