"Someone must go on writing for those who were still convinced of the right of the cause for which they have taken up arms"

Dear May,

I hope this letter finds you in good health as for me well I'm "shell shocked"! It's truly courageous of you to be part of Voluntary Aid Detachment in Rouen and great to lend a helping hand, some needing it more than others. The way that you manage to nurse, bandage and mend the men/boys back to health and put that smile back on their faces. To be that sympathetic ear they yearn for, and light their woodbines with a smile while sticking another ampule of morphine into their thigh! Listening tentatively to their laments and horrid experiences, wishing you could ease their pain in some way. The one's you could not mend giving them the dignity they deserved to be bathed, cleaned and cleansed, gently dried and dressed and placed in a body bag for that special delivery!

Sorry if I sound a tad cynical, but when you have been to hell and back, lost your brother, lost your mind and senseless babble pours from my mouth instead of an intelligent sentence, please forgive me. Try picking up a pen to write a letter to a mother, father, brother, sister, wife or family member of these young men/boys that have been slaughtered, or mutilated on the battlefields for the "GLORY OF GREAT BRITAIN", really is it GREAT! Maybe they should have told us a little more and been truthful. It's easy to sit in the GREAT rooms of parliament and talk and discuss the war, it's fairly safe there. While the real men were out being killed. "Take up arms"...we have become "brothers in arms". I'm sorry to tell you that you shall not be my "Lady of the Lamp" but don't mind me, I'm suffering a psychological state which you in the medical fraternity name it being "shell shocked".

Regards,

MAD JACK SASSOON

PS, WISH YOU WERE HERE!!
