When I watch Rome and people aren't having sex, I think, "Where are the gratuitous sex scenes? I thought I was watching Rome." When I don't see incest and depraved sex acts and couplings that probably never happened, I think, "Wait, am I still watching Rome?"
On the other hand, when I see Atia being an adulterous bitch, (young) Octavian being a twat, and the entire chronology being altered, then I KNOW it's Rome.
Still, I am willingly watching this show, and being nine episodes into the first season as opposed to only thirty pages into J. E. Lendon's Empire of Honour does not reveal much about the value I place on historical accuracy.
[edit] So, whatever. I like it. The guy they cast for
Octavian is a bit strange, but perhaps they are emphasizing his youth.
Maecenas--definitely could've done a better job, seeing as how he was a bit older than Octavian and probably not as juvenile.
Brutus--loved the casting, loved the ridiculous degree of morality, even if he was a bit mousy. My favorite character. Who cares about historical inaccuracies! :D
[edit 2] And
Agrippa--he could've and should've been a lot cooler. They turned him into a loser. Maybe he'll redeem himself in the last few episodes. I always imagined him a great guy and a brilliant military leader when I read about him.
