Rock Golf - the 2008 Open
Rock Golf - Round 1 March 22-March 29 2008
Rock Golf is a music based game, where you aim to get the lowest possible score for a round of 12 holes. Yes, I know it should be 18, but there's a new feature to the course this year and it's led to the need to foreshorten it.
Each hole is a question based on popular music, relating either to lyrics, titles or artists/bands. There is any number of correct answers to each question, and scores are allocated by taking the HIGHEST position reached by a song or artist on the UK singles chart. You are, however, aiming for uniqueness, so a 5 stroke penalty will be added for the second and each subsequent person who repeats the answer given. This tournament will consist of four rounds, over the next four weeks.
Example Question:
A band or artist name that includes a number
Answer format: Title/Artists' names.
Answers might include:
The Dave Clarke 5 (Number 1)
The Four Tops (Number 1)
The B 52s (Number 2)
Heaven 17 (Number 2)
Obviously The Dave Clarke 5 and the Four Tops are the highest scoring - but if more than one person chooses them, they'll be a worse score than the other two.
A hole in one is when a Number 1 is identified by only one person. It is possible that some questions do not have a single stroke answer.
Naturally, comments are screened, to give everyone a level playing field.
Rules
- Chart positions are based on the British charts from 1952 - present as recorded at http://www.everyhit.com/
- Where a song title is required for an answer, give an artist name too, or the chart position will be based on the earliest song of that name on the charts, whatever its position.
- If a song doesn't appear on the website's chart listing, it will automatically be given a position of 41.
- Please give your answers in the format requested.
- Each round of the game will last one week, and scores for each round will generally be posted within 48 hours of the round closing
- You may only use a song once per tournament.
- As a little twist this season, all holes in each round can be answered by songs or references to a single band or artist; (A different band or artist each round) these will be honorary number ones, even if a song failed to chart - indeed, some may be album tracks only. You don't need to identify every song to get the points, but it'll be a good idea to be sure of the band/singer. *
- Edit to answer query: No need to give the connection - there are no points for that, it's simply that each song by the selected band will be an honorary number one, whatever it's original chart position - beyond that songs will be treated exactly as any other song in an entry. HOWEVER, should anyone manage to answer all questions with this single band they will, at worst, tie with the winner of the round. Should anyone find a connection I have not thought of, I will be prepared to negotiate, depending on the size of the artist in question's back catalogue - anyone finding any valid connection will certainly make par.
- There may be a prize for the tournament winner, if I'm feeling flush and in a good mood at the end.
- Closing for round 1 is midday, March 29 2008 (UK Time)
Tournament Scoring
- Strokes for each round will be computed, but overall tournament scores will be based on the following formula:
- The person with the median score will be deemed to have achieved par.
- Competitors with a lower stroke rate will be below par based on position, those with more strokes will be above par, again based on position.
- Therefore, should 11 people take part, the person with the 6th best score will get par, the winner will be five under, and the person with the highest strokes 5 under.
