It feels like all the air has left the room and he's taken its place; he has that look again. I've grown to love (and hate) that look because it keeps him here and yet it means he's so far away. It's just a downturn of his lips, a laziness in the lashes as he watches the ground, but it's a blatant hint at what - who - is on his mind.
I've been here with him for nineteen years, in the land of unfinished life and unfulfilled dreams - this hazy space between giving up and giving in.
[In recent news, the frontman of the popular indie band Evil Eye, Adam, fell to his death last week in what is assumed to be suicide. The following day he was joined in death by his friend and tour manager, Yasu. A note was found in his hotel room but it has not been released to the press as of yet...]
Beside me now, he lights a cigarette and I steal a drag, wondering if there will be more to follow. "It's her birthday, isn't it? Nineteen again?" His response is barely audible, but I already know. When his hand lingers on mine as he returns the theft, I know. It's apology and farewell in a single touch.
Nineteen years of holding on and holding back, that hesitation now holds my heart.
