Your thoughts on the personal "fit" are very encouraging in this case! I made a point in my cover letter of telling them that as the mother of a preemie, that MoD's mission is very important to me. I mentioned specific aspects of Helena's treatment which were impacted because of MoD. For example, the steroids they gave her in the womb to accelerate her lung development before birth were developed using funding from MoD. The tiny nasal feeding tubes, the particular incubator, and the tests that were run to be sure she didn't have any fluid on the brain were also all developed because of MoD. I kept that paragraph succinct in the cover letter, but I made sure they knew this was something I'm passionate about. I worried that it would be too personal to have included all that, but the interviewer mentioned to me that she really liked my cover letter and with your comments here I feel particularly encouraged about this.

Btw, I submitted my resume and cover letter through their website. Their website goofed up (which she admitted) and only sent her my cover letter and letters of reference. So I was excited that she selected me for an interview on the strength of just those documents, without even seeing the resume. She seemed even more enthusiastic about my experience after reading the resume. *crosses fingers with you*

Wow, that's pretty amazing! It shows you have an excellent cover letter - and, yes, when you're dealing with non-profits, values and belief in what the organisation does are very, very important. Yes, of course your skills are too, but if you really believe in what the organisation does you're going to work that much harder to achieve your goals :)

Keeping fingers crossed for you... :)
