Oh my god!! I never recommended The Eight to you??!!?? That's just... I never say I have one favorite book, because I love so many and it feels terribly discriminatory, but if I have a top five, this book is in it. It has its flaws, but I don't care. It's the most original, creative thing I've ever read. Go splurge and buy it, I swear you won't regret it. It's a keeper.
Truth and Beauty is nonfiction, all about Ann Patchett's friendship with writer Lucy Grealy, whom she met in college and then got close with at the Iowa Writers Workshop. It's a hard read in the sense that parts of it are uncomfortable because Grealy is such an extreme personality, but the book is beautifully written and really leaves you with so much to think about regarding the nature of friendships and how people choose to live their lives. Not a happy, happy book, but I still think it's fabulous. I wouldn't read it when you're in a frustrated-from-work mode, however. But it's a good book for the autumn or the winter, somehow. Meaty.
When I was five or six my mother took me into the city to see Santa at the big Macy's on 34th Street, and the say we were there a crew from ABC was filming. So the following week, I was on Good Morning, America, sitting on Santa's lap and asking for a trumpet for Christmas. So, technically a tape of me was on the show, but since that's probably as close as I'm going to get for a while, I count it.
