In a surprising move, the producers of "Prince Caspian"
have cast a 25-year-old to play the title roll in a 3-movie deal. In the book, Caspian is 13-years-old. In the sequel, Voyage of the Dawn Treader, he is 16-17 on the long voyage. In The Silver Chair he is in his 70s.
After a
Caspian hopeful had posted about his casting call, we already knew there were going to changes such as this one. So it's not as huge of a shock as it might've been. And because of Doug Gresham's unqualified praise of the production plans, I'm not going to fret over this. CS Lewis' step son has never hesitated to speak up when he has a problem in these situations, and Walden Media has granted him immense creative control over these productions. I personally know him to be extremely protective about maintaining the integrity of the books. So if he's cool with it, I see no problem.
I've got a few theories on what types of adaptive changes would require an older Caspian. I also wonder if this won't make it easier for them to develop the romance when they adapt "Dawn Treader"? After all, I always did think that Caspian in the book, Dawn Treader, played much older than a 16-17 year old boy. (Think about his imperial behavior on Deathwater Island or when he wants to go to Aslan's Country, as well as his interaction with the Star's daughter.)
So, although I'm going to miss seeing Caspian as a child struggling to take the throne and fight, I can understand why the producers might be making this call.
