Some initial thoughts on S5...

So, the season five. I don't normally do episode reaction posts, preferring to get my squee on in meta-post comments, but these two episodes have quite pleased me and I want to jot out a few thoughts. I thought both of them were generally tightly plotted, brilliantly acted, and that the cinematography (particularly in 5x01) was just delightful ( Read more... )

I love when you meta!

I want to join you "Hate Bobby Club"! For more than two years I've found myself cringing when his name comes up in the opening credits. I hate that they've expanded his character so unrealistically. Bobby is just a friend and a resource should be treated as such. It irks me to no end to see Dean and Sam practically genuflecting at the alter of his greatness.

As for Bobby and John breaking hold of the demons, I read another meta where it was suggested they didn't. That it was DEAN who pushed the demon back when he, under extreme emotional distress, called their names and said no. I found this interesting.

I think they sort of screwed the pooch though in terms of how they set up Bobby's disability.

I think you're wrong here. I got the impression Zachariah took away Bobby's ability to walk. We see him stumbling into the ER, so it would seem he had the use of his legs then.

I like the concept that Bobby will have to struggle with this and overcome it.

Does it make me a bad person to want to see Bobby-The-Magnificent be completely broken by this? To have someone tell him to STFU and stop his whining, that life sucks but he has to play the hand he was dealt?

I'm also joining thandie's "Hate Ellen Club"! In my opinion she is nothing more than a meddling barkeep. Dean owes her NOTHING. He never asked for the attention she gives him. Sam owes her NOTHING. She has no right to ask for an explanation for the tension between him and Dean. Just....NO!

Sam and Sam's addition & Sam's darkness has been a part of him since the very beginning.

WORD! WORD! WORD!

I also love the direction Castiel has taken. I love that even though Dean is "The Vessel", was his charge, and is now his friend, he put sigils on both of them. I'm seeing this as an acceptance of Sam. *puts fingers in ears and whistles*

And I also love that he trusts Dean enough to rage at him even though he knows he will be asking him to give up the amulet.

Amulet = God EMF = FTW! And I love that it's a DeanandSam thing. I think this is going to be SO IMPORTANT! I can still see Sam taking it off and handing it back to Dean in LR.

One thing to note here. Dean said he felt naked without it. It made me remember him being with Anna. He took it off when he had sex with her. Now, I really, really didn't like Route 666, but I re-watched the sex scene with Cassie and the shower scene in Bugs(for accuracy's sake, you know) and he didn't take it off then. Is this important? They seemed to focus on it with Anna. He put it on the back dash. Why?

Dean and the separation

Again, all I can say is WORD!

Great meta, as always!

Rock On!

My meta is enjoyed! \o/

As for Bobby and John breaking hold of the demons, I read another meta where it was suggested they didn't. That it was DEAN who pushed the demon back when he, under extreme emotional distress, called their names and said no. I found this interesting.

I think I read that meta! The concept that if Sam could control demons due to his bloodline (rather than the demon blood) then potentially Dean could as well? I like the concept a good deal - sleeper!powers FTW! I'd love that for a few different reasons. For one, it would mean that Sam's powers are officially not evil (and I love me some powers!Sammy). For two, it would explain why Bobby was freed relatively easily while John had to struggle - Dean was already grievously wounded when John broke free. For three, did I mention sleeper!powers FTMFW? We did sort of get proof from baby Rosie in Salvation that the powers were innate rather than granted through YED's blood, though I was never quite certain whether that was retconned or not since the issue never came up again.

I think you're wrong here. I got the impression Zachariah took away Bobby's ability to walk. We see him stumbling into the ER, so it would seem he had the use of his legs then.

That's another good point. It's very possible that Zachariah deliberately took away Bobby's ability to walk but even if that's the case, I stand by the fact that, medically speaking, Bobby should have been FAR more impacted by the serrated knife to the gut than he was. The risk of infection from a perforated bowel alone... Urgh.

I also love the direction Castiel has taken. I love that even though Dean is "The Vessel", was his charge, and is now his friend, he put sigils on both of them. I'm seeing this as an acceptance of Sam.

I'm not sure what Castiel's feelings are towards Sam. I think he's gotten though that Sam is important to Dean and is starting to recognize just how far that goes. Castiel has included Sam before; he did it in 4x15 when he talked about needing Dean and Sam to save the seal, but his general focus still seems to be on Dean. He was furious with Dean, for instance, but he didn't spare Sam a second look. I'm not sure quite what that means, but I think it's at least a "he's important to Dean, who is important to me" situation.

I think the amulet thing with Cassie is an indication that he trusted Anna more and so was more open with himself. Cassie had already snubbed Dean once, after all, and she wasn't actually all that kind to him in the episode itself. Mind, I loved Cassie but she refused to ever acknowledge her sheer disbelief as the reason that that they split up might have caused Dean to hold back with her a bit.

It might also have been because Dean had just gotten Sam back in that episode so he might have been a bit more reluctant than usual to take it off. Plus he'd just had it taken from him, hadn't he? Skins wasn't too long before that episode.
