Some initial thoughts on S5...
So, the season five. I don't normally do episode reaction posts, preferring to get my squee on in meta-post comments, but these two episodes have quite pleased me and I want to jot out a few thoughts. I thought both of them were generally tightly plotted, brilliantly acted, and that the cinematography (particularly in 5x01) was just delightful

Definitely. I think they tend to get distracted by the latest shiny thing and interest in it tends to last for about a season and a half before they move onto something else. I really hope that tensions will last at least for a while between Sam and Dean, but I wouldn't be upset if this were pretty much the lowest point between the brothers and things start to slowly improve from here on out. I just don't want it all to get brushed under the rug, even if things start to get better from here on out.
I wonder though if fans tend to flock towards fans of the same tastes. My sister likes Dean best, but that might be because she was the one I ranted to about Sam when Sex and Violence aired and she knew nothing about the series. I think my flist is pretty balanced between Sam and Dean fans, but I think I'm unusual in that regard. If you have any links to those polls and articles though, I'd love to look over them!

Most recently if you look at the EW Hottest whatever polls and the number of comments each generates, Dean's generally gets way more. But then again there are sock puppets on all sides and the deanhaters have been spamming anyone who says anything positive about Dean so that's not particularly scientific which definitely ups the comment count. But over the span of four years, Dean has just won pretty much every vs. poll even when their are campaigns to guilt everyone into voting for Sam or a bibro option. And when Sam is in a poll against someone else, it tends to be a much harder slog for him to win.
But there is definitely something to people flocking to like-minded people especially considering how contentious this fandom is these days. My experience with LJ is that it is heavily dominated by wincestors who tend to be more bibro/sam orientated these days unlike the first couple of years when it was heavily bibro/dean dominated. But I think that's because Dean no longer seems like the beta/girl of . Maybe the authors resentful of the guy getting in the way of their muses. ;)
Now if you go to TWoP, people tend to be more gen and now dean/cas oriented rather than wincesty. Or maybe they don't admit it quite so publicly. Same goes for sntv, though all the mods over there are samgirls so most deanfans I know, don't bother posting there much.
I dunno, this stuff is really hard to quantify and obviously our opinions tend to be colored by our biases so who really knows. *shrugs*
