In Which I Ramable About SSHG Fanfic
It appears that my last post on here was 2017. How in the heck has it been 3 years?
SSHG fanfic. My original fanfic OTP. My first foray into the rabbit hole as fanfic, actually. And the one that still sticks with me today. My tastes have changed, quite a lot, actually. But the essence and the ideas of the stories stick with me. There are basic aspects of the that pairing in the HP world that click. These days, I'm not a fan of the student/teacher aspect. And some stories can feel like nails on a chalkboard with cliches (though, I do love a good cliche sometimes), ridiculous inside jokes, cheesy smut scenes, excessive descriptions, and Mary Sue's up the wahzoo. But there are STILL aspects about those very same stories that I adore. And I still find myself rereading from time to time.
What I'm saying, is that after all of this time, I still love this ship and, yes, I'm still reading the stories. :)
But, why am I posting?
Because the first SSHG fanfic was first posted on September 17, 2000. Yes. You read that right. It was September 17, 2000. That was 20 years ago last week. CRAZY! (And geez, doesn't that make me feel OLD!)
That fic was Beyond the Silver Rainbow: A Forbidden Lover by lupinlover. I didn't actually hunt for the fic. The gal was 12 when she wrote it. But I'm sure I skimmed it once upon a time. You can follow the link to the original fic, but really it's just an author's note about taking it down to fix. I did not go to the other sites she mentioned posting to. I was simply looking for the original and this was the one another fandom person found. :)
The next fic that I can find (that's actually tagged with characters) was April 24, 2001. That fic is Saving You, Saving Me by Strega Brava and is still on ffnet. It is possible there were others before that, but that was what I found when I first started looking last spring. The WIKTT Yahoo Group was started 9/29/2001. And, well, I wasn't around for most of that early stuff. But the history is out there for those who want to go digging.
I know that Shiv posted on her LJ a few months back floating out the idea of an Exchange in honor of this 20 year anniversary. She has been busy. I have been busy. We haven't binned the idea, but we both need things to settle before committing to it. If there are people out there who are still interested, please reach out to one of us. If you look at sshg_giftfest and sshg_promptfest, both are planning on running this next year. YAY! So keep an eye out for those as well!
Now, if anyone wants to add "must reads" to my very long list of fics, that would be appreciated! Okay, I'm not looking for new fic. I'm not even looking for "new to me" fic. I'm looking for the tried and true stories that we all turn to time and time again to reread. Turn about is fair play. Some of my MANY reread go tos are:
