Yeah... this is an open letter to a certain Twi fanfic author because I'm pissed off and she's not the only person to do such a thing. Feel free to ignore!
Selling your ending.
Good luck to you.
Btw, it's the selling the ending that upsets me more than absolutely anything else. In this case, we aren't getting the ending. We're being told to read a story that is not about Edward & Bella and that we then have to pretend that it's fanfiction... because, quite frankly, that was why I enjoyed it to begin with. We now have to purchase said book.
My issue isn't with publishing.
My issue is with pulling a story, claiming it's being published by a reputable & legitimate publishing house, and taking advantage of the fanfic readers.
I comment. Both under my GinnyW pen and a private pen. I PM authors. I give not only my theories, but comments and remarks on story flow, plot, and characterisations. No one that is writing a WIP can honestly tell me that they are not influenced in some way by such comments. This isn't thinking that I'm superior, this is an example, I am NOT the only person who does such things. All of those comments influence the writing of a WIP. Plain and simple. You're lying if you say that it doesn't.
So, instead of you say thank you to those who comment by telling them that they now must buy your book.
Yeah... you're welcome.
Oh, and btw, fanfiction is FREE! Why is that? Ask yourself! Because you are using another author's characters, or setting, or world. With Twi fanfic, at least the AH side of things, we use character names and little else... but if that's the case, why did you write it as fanfic to begin with?
Let me enlighten you.
You did it because it's comfortable, familiar, and because you had a built in audience to feed your ego, to encourage your writing and your creativity.
Again, you're welcome.
Fanfiction cannot be sold. We all know this. Hell, the disclaimer says it all. However, the interesting thing is that in Twi authors are taking their stories, gaining a readership/following, and then pulling off the story to publish and make a buck or two. All off of the fanfiction. So, in that respect, is the fanfiction being sold.
Once a story leaves the author's hands, the author loses control. People can imagine different outcomes. They can talk about it with a friend. They can photocopy a book they purchased and give it to a neighbor. They can painstakingly type it all out and then email it to a dozen friends. They can rewrite it as a play and perform it for their friend. They can rewrite it to have a happier ending for themselves. Plain and simple, the author of ANY work HAS NO CONTROL! And with fanfiction, which I already established is FREE, it can be distributed.
Yes, I pulled my story. However, when I pulled it, I made certain it was available in a downloadable mode. I'd already chosen how that story would be published, and yes, online at ffnet is PUBLISHED. WOOT! I'm a published author! (Ahem... sorry.)
Anyhow, you shall now be dubbed Vixen the 4th and I wish you luck in your endeavours.
Oh... and again... YOU'RE WELCOME!
