George Weasley was lonely, alone among a lively crowd of people. To George, solitude wasn’t disappointing; it came as a welcome relief and he enjoyed it. Even if he was in a room full people, he could just keep them out of his thoughts and act as if he was the only one there. It was something he had become very good at doing in the past few years. They said he wasn’t the George Weasley of old. But how could he be without one ear and his twin, Fred? He didn’t expect anyone to understand that, so he kept his distance.
He was attending a wedding today - the wedding ceremony of Zacharias Smith and Daphne Greengrass. Who would have guessed that the two of them would end up together? But it seemed Zacharias was very happy with Daphne. George figured that all Slytherins didn’t end up marrying each other in the end. The wedding ceremony had already ended, and now some people were busy talking while others were dining. He was at the singles’ table with relatively unknown people by his side. There was a lot of shouting coming from one the nearby tables.
‘Come on, Pansy,’ said a rather high-pitched voice. ‘Let me find you a table. You can’t be here - it’s the couples’ table.’
George turned to his left to see Pansy Parkinson staring fiercely at a girl in a gray satin dress. There was something evil about the way the girl’s lips curled into a smile. She was also staring back rather smugly, and everyone sitting at that table was watching with great interest.
‘You must be very happy your sister is getting married, Astoria,’ said Pansy rather loudly. ‘And you’ve managed to earn Draco’s sympathy, it seems.’
‘So you think Draco is here as my date out of sympathy?’ said Astoria, laughing mirthlessly. ‘I’m sure you can do better than that, Parkinson!’
George had only heard that it got incredibly dirty when two Slytherins fought, but now he had got the opportunity to experience it. It was rather hilarious that they were fighting about Draco Malfoy. George had always thought he would end up with Parkinson but from what he could see, Malfoy had hurt her rather badly. There was an expression of deep misery across her face but she was doing a good job of concealing it behind the anger.
A few people hurried to leave the table.
‘It’s not easy dating a Malfoy, Astoria,’ Pansy said warningly ‘And Draco is especially hard to please.’
‘You would know that very well, right?’ said Astoria, smiling malevolently.
Pansy looked affronted. ‘Shut up, you filthy-’
‘That’s enough, Pansy,’ a familiar voice said threateningly. Draco Malfoy had just arrived on the scene, looking rather agitated.
‘But, Draco-’ Pansy began in a slight whimper.
‘You know, Astoria,’ Malfoy said, completely ignoring Pansy, ‘I want to show you the new manor my father has bought for me. I hope your sister won’t mind if we go now.’
Astoria smiled triumphantly. George wondered how Malfoy could date such a stuck-up girl, but then, he reminded himself, Malfoy had always been a git.
‘No, no, I’m sure she’ll be fine with it, Draco,’ Astoria replied, giving him a coy smile.
‘Let’s leave, then,’ Malfoy said apathetically.
He put one arm around Astoria’s shoulder, and soon, they went out of sight. Pansy stood there motionlessly. She stared at the spot where Malfoy had been standing; her eyes were wide in shock, but the tears didn’t flow.
For the first time, he felt deeply concerned for a Slytherin. He would be the first to admit that it was quite amusing. Having witnessed how she had been abandoned by someone she loved so much, he just felt the need be there for her. The pain of losing a loved one was simply unbearable, and he knew how agonizing it was for her. He had experienced it too, and he knew it was especially difficult to deal with it in isolation. Her wounds were fresher, though, so he felt that he could console her.
‘Are you all right, Parkinson?’ George asked in a slightly tentative manner.
She turned around and a grimace appeared on her face as she saw him. She looked away impatiently.
‘I don’t want the sympathy of a one-eared marvel, Weasley,’ she spat in a broken voice.
She was trembling, overwhelmed with emotions, but something kept her from shedding the tears. Perhaps, it was the pride or she had already cried too much so all the tears had dried up. But she did not need to cry for George to realize she was upset; her pain was clearly visible through the ill-mannered subterfuge.
‘I want some chocolate ice-cream. Do you want that too?’ George questioned in an unaffected tone. ‘I know a good place where we can find some.’
She turned once again, and it seemed for a moment as though she was about to open her mouth to say something impolite but no words came. She seemed incapable of speaking; she simply closed her eyes and took a deep breath. He took her hand and as no bitter words of protest came his way after a few moments, he felt assured that she wasn’t going to say no to the offer.
However different their reasons might have been, they were both hurt and lonely; they had lost someone they loved. He felt akin to her, as though she was a part of his world - the one where he shut everyone out. He had no way to explain why but she was the one person he wanted to let in.

He watched her as she sat with Teddy on her lap, humming a familiar lullaby. It was simply a very relaxing tune and it calmed the senses momentarily. He listened to it thoughtfully every time she sang it to Teddy because it was the only time he could forget all his troubles. It was the one time when he did not have to worry about the future or think about the present. He could just look at his treasured family peacefully without anything on his mind.
Sometimes, he wished he could just capture the moment and hold on to it for the rest of his life. Because he was too afraid that he would never experience moments such as these. He was scared he wouldn’t be able to hear his son speak for the first time, ride his first toy broomstick or board the Hogwarts Express for the first time. Everyday, he feared that he wouldn’t be able hear Nyphadora humming the lullaby the next day. But when the next day arrived and he watched his wife put their son to sleep, he felt relieved. And sometimes, he felt hopeful. Perhaps, one day they would all be able to live a life less uncertain.
He went over to take his place beside Nymphadora and Teddy, who had already fallen asleep. Remus smiled weakly as he saw the undisturbed expression on his innocent face.
‘It looks like he’s having very sweet dreams,’ Remus said, running a hand through Teddy’s head.
‘Yes, sweet dreams, indeed,’ Nymphadora replied as she smiled softly.
Remus sighed. ‘There are dreams and there are these …’
‘I can’t say if all dreams come true,’ Nymphadora reflected earnestly, after a while. ‘But we can always hope that ours will. At least, I want them to. I want all this to end.’
Her voice broke towards the end. Her face held a strained expression. Remus reached for her hand and gave it a squeeze. He couldn’t give her any consolation, and he couldn’t tell her for certain that their dreams would come true. He was helpless; he couldn’t comfort her, so the only thing he could do was agree with her.
‘I want it to end too.’
