I watched Speed Racer tonight. On purpose. Here's the real shit-spurter though: I LIKED IT. Seriously. I kid you not.
The film is a JOKE, in the best possible sense of the word. A gag. A laugh-riot, with so much eye candy I nearly exploded. Sure, it's nearly 30 minutes longer than it needs to be, but so was The 40 Year Old Virgin. The Wachowski's get the joke. I get the joke. No one else seems to get the joke. If you took that seriously, you're doing it wrong. Really, really wrong. That was sci-fi/comedy at it's very best. One doesn't see the two genres mixed often enough, but it's fertile ground. I don't think they meant to lose that much money (I do think they meant to take the studio for a ride -- that's half of the joke), I just think they thought more people would get the gag. A bad bet, in retrospect.
Honestly, it's SPEED RACER, people. It prominently features a MONKEY! How much clearer could they be?! Comedy gold, and not even the unintentional variety. I think.
