Sputnik and cheese

We get a fortnightly delivery of organic vegetables from a local farm.

The most recent delivery included kohlrabi, which is a member of the cabbage family. It's green and spherical and it bears a remarkable resemblance to Sputnik.

One cookery web site says of kohlrabi:

I'm pretty certain that I have eaten kohlrabi before, but it has been a long time. After spending more than 13 years as vegetarian (1991 until the beginning of 2005), I ate my share of cruciferous vegetables to last a lifetime, so I'm not sure that kohlrabi would be at the top of my grocery list. :)

Hmm. The description of it as being like broccoli stems doesn't exactly sell me on it, since I've always found broccoli stems to be unpleasantly tough and stringy.
