Today, I was attempting to go to the beach with my family, but we were diverted onto Wilmington because of a road closure. We were complaining and pissed off because there was absolutely no way we were going to be able to make it to the beach. We really regretted not getting an earlier start. The traffic was awfully backed up. There were police everywhere- whatever was causing the closure piqued our interest and we decided to stick around and ask the news crews what had just happened.
According to the newswoman, an out-of-control truck went airborne over a median and literally ripped the top half off of a sedan and smashed the hell out of an SUV. The two people in the truck had died on impact from this horrific car crash, she told us. At this moment, a helicopter flew overhead. The newscaster said that it was for a critically injured third person who was being airlifted to Memorial.
We went about our ways after the traffic had cleared enough for us to get home. After learning that the airlifted victim died in surgery at the hospital, we felt fortunate that we had waited a bit longer to get on the highway after all. We may have been stuck in traffic but we could have been on the bridge during the accident.
Well, I got a call while running errands in Target tonight. The third person was my good friend from middle school, who started last year at UGA with me- Alicia Anderson.
I still don't really know what to do, which I suppose is why I'm writing on LiveJournal... it does not seem real. This is the closest I've been to tragic death (other than family) since Ashleigh Moore died, and honestly, I was much closer to Alicia. Her death is something that probably won't fully hit me for awhile. I've cried a lot because it's just so ridiculous to imagine. But I can only imagine what her twin brother is going through right now, and her entire family. I believe her boyfriend might have been involved in the crash as well, if not killed as well. Tragedy is really overwhelming everything right now.
It really shows you what a difference a few seconds can make. Life or death. Had she not been on that bridge at that exact moment, she would be alive.
Please keep Alicia in your thoughts.
Edit: Recently found out that Alicia was actually traveling in a Jeep with her boyfriend and boyfriend's mother. Their deaths resulted from their Jeep flipping across the median. It was so badly mangled that they thought it was a truck. This is still under investigation so it's just what I'm getting from the news.
