art journaling in mid-January

Jan 18, 2013 14:54

Since I’ve been experimenting with different schedules and things in my art studio, I’ve been art journaling a little differently. Not nearly as much as I did in December (well, December Daily took up most of my creative time in December, to be honest) but a fair amount. A little each day…

Here’s some pages from this week.

a girl & her cat

I had this photo of Gracie and Ginger and I just wanted to make a simple inclusion with it so I cut down a piece of Basic Grey patterned paper and bound it into my journal using some washi tape.

journaling

On the back I just journaled a bit about what was going on around here.

stop and look around

This page actually came together over a few days. I started by gluing a bunch of receipts, business cards, bits of mail, tags, etc. onto a blank journal page. Then I spritzed some spray ink over it. And then I misted it with white acrylic paint. Then I stuck on bits of tape, etc. Then I just stuck the photos on top of it (we have a bit of an orchid garden going on the kitchen counter at the moment and the other photo is of the little praying monk statue Tom got me for Christmas) and a quote from the movie Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, which is pretty much on CONSTANTLY in our house.

“Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.”

Gracie saw “Ferris Bueller” for the first time over Christmas break and she’s never really *stopped* watching it since then. If she has time, like on early Saturday morning, she’ll watch the entire thing, but if she’s got five minutes here, five minutes there, she’ll just turn it on, watch a bit, and then turn it off, and then next time she turns on the TV she’ll just pick up where she left off.

It’s interesting to me how much it intrigues her. I see a lot of her in Ferris- she’s sort of a good-hearted optimist and she’s always trying to find the fun in what she does. I don’t know if she identifies with him or what. I forgot how *beautiful* a film it is- all the city scenes are so great. It really is a good movie.

Anyway, since it’s on so often, and the quote resonated, I thought I would include it.

now

This is another page that built over a few days. I started out by testing some markers and paint on a blank journal page and then wound up collaging and painting over it, layer by layer.

a page in progress…

And this is a page in process… again, I just played with some stamps and some ink and some stencils and left it to dry. Later this afternoon I’ll go back to it and see what comes out of it. I have some photos I took of the garden so maybe those will end up in there.

I have to admit, I kind of like this new process of art journaling. Instead of *starting* with the photos, I’m starting with the medium (paint, stamps, ink, etc.), considering what photo/image might end up on the page, and then sort of building up the page to meet the image.  For a long time I was focusing on an the picture/photos and working my way DOWN to make everything match the photo. (I don’t know if that makes any sense.)

But I’m using more of my supplies and “playing” more, and that was a goal of mine, so I hope I can stick with it. I find myself looking forward to journaling more that I know each page doesn’t require five straight hours of steady work, and that I can do pretty much anything I want instead of trying to make everything match, if that makes any sense.

Anyway, as always, thankyou thankyou thankyou for looking! <3
