Well...they're never really separate.( I had a whole paper on this for summer concerning Turkey and their government and arguing that it's never really separate...) Anyways I don't think they can ever be completely separate, no matter what anyone says, your personal religious beliefs influence your everyday decisions, whether conscious or subconsciously.(That's just my personal belief.)
I do think they should be separate however, that just doesn't seem to happen often.
Everyone out there has some kind of set of beliefs or moral/social code they live by, that influence their every day decisions. That code or set of beliefs has been influenced, at some time, and most likely by other religious or moral codes, believed by another group of people. People who have gathered together to worship in one way or another, or agreed upon to follow a moral/social type code. It might not be called a religion by those who follow it but that group of people have agreed upon the right and wrongs of what to do, how to do it, who can or cannot do it and what can happen to you in your after life(assuming they believe in one.).
