On a related note, my doc has moved up to your area and opened her own practice. Her name is Dr. Adrienne Clamp and she's in Bethesda. http://www.dradrienneclamp.com/ I highly recommend her as she listens and has a variety of treatments she uses like acupuncture, Chinese herbs, and homeopathy.

Very interesting--makes me a little scared to eat pizza, lol!

But in all seriousness, if some substances can make your skin break out in hives, and close up your throat, and cause anaphylactic shock, why shouldn't it be possible that they have neurologic effects, too or instead? And it gives an interesting twist on the idea of "cravings" for some food substances: if they're converted into opioids, they can probably--to at least some people--be addictive like opioids.

My eldest is on the autistic spectrum. We haven't tried gluten free, but we substantially limit his intake of dairy products. It definitely helps. A few years ago, he got a hold of some yogurt at my in-laws. He loves yogurt, but it makes him loopy, and we don't let him have it at all. He ate four or five before anyone noticed. He was incoherent and goofy for three days.

One big problem with kids on the spectrum is that the range of behaviors and stimuli that impact them is so wide. For some kids, a strict GCF diet is very effective. For others, it's just a pain in the neck to stick with. And then you get the missionaries. These are parents who are convinced that their (extremely ascetic) path is the One True Cure. Some of these paths include bad science, Luddite-ism, conspiracy theories, and just plain quackery. For some reason, this lunacy is much more prevalent with treatment of autism than ADHD and OCD (both with which I am familiar).
