yes, i made a book meme

Work is uber-slow as the system has gone down.

So to pass the time I've made a book meme:

-Choose a book genre
-Choose five books from that genre
-Tell me why I should read them.

My genre is non-fiction. In no particular order

1.)Amazing Rare Things: The Art of Natural History in the Age of Discovery by David Attenborough, Susan Owens, and Martin Clayton
Art and Natural History. Attenborough explores how naturalists recorded things visually before photography. Gorgeous illustrations.
2.)In the Heart of the Sea: The Epic True Story That Inspired "Moby Dick" by Nathaniel Philbrick
The history of whaling. No, not modern whaling, but whaling that insipred Melville. It's absolutely hair raising at times, and talks about methods, the way people lived and superstitions the whalers believed. It's one of those books to curl up next to the fire (or radiator in my case) with on a cold, windy night. (The book also inspired Mastodon to write an album about moby dick. hee.)
3.)Ablaze: Story of Chernobyl by Piers Paul Read
I found this book at the train station and started reading it. Worth reading to understand the history behind Chernobyl and the aftermath, much of which was largely covered up by the Soviet Union. If you listen to the media (ha!) you'll probably think Chernobyl only ended in 56 deaths and was a highly exaggerated incident. This book tells the truth.
4.)A Guinea Pig's History of Biology by Jim Endersby
One of the best popular science books I've ever read. Talks about the history of science and the animals that helped scientists discover things about ourselves and genetics. Also shows that today's right answer could be tomorrow's wrong one, and tips it's hat to female scientists. There's an excerpt I may post soon that I absolutely love.
5.) The Hot Zone by Richard Preston
This is a book i'm going to tell you NOT to read if you are squeamish. It's about viruses, specifically the filoviruses and how they are emerging from the rainforest as people and nature continue to clash. My biology teacher in high school introduced me to this book. He read the first chapter and by the end everyone was horrified.

Our next reaction was to fight over who got to borrow the book first.

Edit: Post now public by popular demand.
