Melancholy nostalgia and Work

Feb 02, 2013 11:23

Greetings flist. I'm feeling melancholy and nostalgic this morning. The weather is freezing out and I woke up with low blood sugar. At breakfast I drank too much very strong tea and now I'm trying to recover before starting my day. I plan to make a challah bread, and after that I'm not sure. Plans for a "board game" evening with friends were ( Read more... )

I'm resonating with your longing for connection with the ancestors. I was fortunate to know 3 out of 4, but my dad's father died when he was young.
Is there anyone who might remember them whom you could talk to? Eventually I dreamt about my missing Grandfather, and in writing about him more ... Something emerged. Connection? Maybe just affinity, but depending on how intuitive (& woo-woo!) you are, at least additional understanding, and maybe more of a relationship emerges.
Hope that makes sense!

My brothers and my father will remember them well. But I don't particularly feel like talking to them today. Aaaah, the irony.

But perhaps later on in the day I will reconsider.

Interesting that you too knew 3 out of 4.

I adores my father's mother, the "victorian matriarch" grandmother. My mother's mother was cold and distant, and I'm still learning about her severe social phobia, of which I carry a tinge. It helps me be more forgiving to understand this about her. My mom's father was sometimes the warm storytelling grandpa, sometimes aloof and distant.
I did a family tree once looking at depression, addiction, psychic & artistic ability... it was fascinating to see that I hadnt invented all of my traits!

Oh, that is an interesting and useful way to do a family tree!

Sorry to hear your blood sugar is being oogy, I hope you are feeling better now.
I posted a while ago about a cassette I have from the 70s with my grandad speaking on it. I am glad to have that since he died back in 1989, so I know what you mean, and that show about the Edwardians does sound really interesting. It was also nice for Dirk to get to hear my grandad. BTW I also knew 3 out of 4 - my maternal grandfather died when I was a baby. Apparently he did see me once, but I of course can't remember it.
I figured T.Rex must have parents from Ukraine since he's got about as UKRAINIAN a name as it is possible to have. ;) Whereabout did his parents come from? (I have actually lived in Kiev).

Thanks. :-)

I think I'm also just exhausted from work.

T-Rex does indeed have the ultimate of Ukrainian names. I am ashamed to admit I don't remember the name of the town where they came from. But then, his mother told me she grew up one place and was forcibly moved somewhere else during the war. It was actually very interesting to hear stories of non-Jewish suffering from WWII. It gave me a kind of emotional link to her, in a way. I think they lived somewhere in the West that is now part of Poland.

That's so cool that you have a recording of your grandad.

I, too, regret not asking my grandparents about their youth, but by the time I realised how much I wanted to know, they were gone.

Yeah, that's just how it is I suppose. It's not until we are old enough to understand that we are ready to ask. And by then, it's too late.
