... And you know, maybe I'd better start shopping. Because the last gift he got that I know went over well was Omo, and... well, that's cute coming, as it did, from a two-year-old, but I think maybe I should find something a little more adult than a plush orangutan.
Well, usually I think of him as Sorcerer. And I'm the same way-- I think of people as how they were introduced to me, with a very few exceptions. Samael suits him, but he's... always the Sorcerer behind it, I think.
*smiles* He's good at that-- knowing what someone needs and drawing people into larger or different circles. He's also good at generally infuriating people, but that... always happens unexpectedly, in my experience.
My light. Well. The first thing to remember about the Blade-- Johnny, I should say-- is that he's crazy. Mad as a hatter, off the deep end. In the same way that the Sorcerer knows just what to say, just how to touch, the Blade knows pain, inside and out. So I don't know if he meant... some light that only he could see, or if he meant the toy I tried to give him. Like those executive toys, a fidget, something to do with your hands when you're bored.
It was something like... like silly putty, only made of light. Well. Of magic that looked like light.
And Callie Min is a sweet girl, just as mad as Johnny. She Named him.
I don't think you can avoid it, with everyone around you who seems to know him.
I'm afraid that you and I are in the same situation. I've no idea what to get him. What do you get for someone like Samael?
Yes, you're right - the 'Sorcerer' is always lurking behind any other persona or name he takes on, even for me I suppose.
*chuckles*
He seems to be at that. I've suddenly found myself with a completely new and different circle of friends and acquaintances. It's been quite a heady experience. Infuriating? I hope I don't see that side of him, at least for a while.
Red mentioned that he wasn't - that he was insane. I'm not looking forward to meeting him. Oh. It would be interesting to find out which he meant, though. Magickal silly putty. How very interesting.
Well, first I wander around ebay for ideas. I'm sure something will hit me. I hope.
*nods* For a long time he went nameless... partly, I think, because there was no one willing to name him from whom he would accept a name. I wouldn't give him one. Couldn't think of one that fit, I guess.
I hope you don't ever have to see that side of him.
Red's right, he's... nutty. And you might not have to meet him. Or he might not take an interest, at least of the... well, of the stabbing kind.
*materializes the light putty again-- it's more elastic than silly putty, returning to a round shape instead of just flowing downward as Gina twirls it around her fingers* It's neat stuff. It just didn't suit him, I guess.
Callie is something like a neighbor of mine. Have you met Drusilla?
Music. Distraction, diversion, sensation, experience. Which means he should be easy to shop for, when in reality it... just doesn't work that way.
Well a name... it gives power, in a way, and shape, but it also imposes limits. Maybe the name Mike chose for him imposed fewer limits? Or more acceptable ones? He never asked me for a name, just grumbled that he didn't have one.
It's your call, of course. Because... well, you know how they-- the Arcana, that is-- refer to the Goblin King Jareth as the Sorcerer's first father? The Blade's first father is Jack the Ripper.
*fiddles with the light some more, stretching it into a thin snake and twirling it like a jumprope-- showing off, in other words*
I think he was in a flee-the-light place.
That makes things simpler. Callie is a little like Drusilla, only Callie doesn't see the future and isn't a vampire. She's just... crazy as a soup knife, really.
From what I've seen of his taste in music, it's diverse. Metallica might be as safe a bet as anything.
Well... Hm. They way they work, the Arcana, is that the don't have names until they have an... incarnation, so to speak. Red used to be Emily-- that was the name Ethan gave her, and the change in names has affected her appearance and her personality, and partly how she relates to people. She belonged to Ethan, in a certain very real way. That's a part of why they seek names, around here. To belong, to cement things between themselves and outsiders to the Arcana. The name itself can be anything at all, but it... shapes them, sharpens their image, their identity, in a way that just being the Blade, the Sorcerer, the Child-Bride, or the Star can't.
I haven't met Jack. I've just heard *counts* third-hand accounts of Jack and Johnny together from Callie.
*rolls the light up into a ball*
Nifty little toy. Maybe somebody will want it someday.
I'd heard something about 'Emily'. Perhaps I should ask her about it. How did she get the name 'Red', then? A change in name can do all that? Belonged to him? Now wait - do they belong to whoever gives them the name, or is just that a name gives them a sense of belonging?
I understand the last part - they become a person, rather than simply an Archetype, correct?
Hmmm. I know nothing of Jack and Johnny. I am more of an acquaintance of Jack than anything else.
*still amazed*
Perhaps.
I understand that, though I had always believed Dru to be rather... unique.
It's maybe a little different with the Child-Bride, because she almost has to belong to someone to ... fulfill her canon, I think is the phrase I've heard used. The Sorcerer can be a solitary figure; so can the Blade and the Brute and the Witch. The Twins are always together, and the Child-Bride always has a groom, even if he's not the same archetype in every story. And the name Red is for another story... I guess she figures it's just easier not to switch back and forth.
With most of the others, I think it's just the sense of belonging, and probably a... very intimate tie to whoever Named them.
I understand they went to Las Vegas. Briefly.
*vanishes the shiny goo*
Fairy trifles, as they say.
She is. So is Callie. But knowing Drusilla might make it easier to deal with Callie. And possibly Johnny. Because if Johnny turns up (and he might, because evidently he misses Samael), I'll make sure Callie's around. She has a tendency to distract him.
Gina, could you explain more about the Child Bride, please? What do you mean she almost HAS TO belong to someone? Can't she simply have a relationship without that caveat?
Oh, all right. I understand about her name, then, I think. So they can all be solitary except for her? Does she fall in love, or simply need to be with someone?
Interesting. So because Mike named Samael, they are tied together now?
She... hm. I think she can have a romantic relationship without the aspect of belonging to someone (and through that, she tends to develop a power over the groom, whoever he winds up being). But it wouldn't be the sort that... that lasted, that belonged in her canon.
She's... the most likely to attach herself to someone quickly. Sometimes it's love, sometimes she's... married off for political or finiancial reasons. Sometimes she's carried off. I don't know all the stories yet.
*nods* I think so. And I think Sorcerer-- Samael-- accepted the name and the tie because it was from someone... on more or less equal footing.
I understand there are a few less druggies on the street.
*amused*
I can pull it out again, if you like.
Well, it's not a concrete defense, but it's just a party. We shouldn't need an airtight security defense, particularly not with so many reality-manipulators in one place.
I'll have her stop by... is here okay?
((Callie lives in my head. She's fairly safe, but she doesn't actually have her own LJ.))

On second thought, I don't. Not really.

I hope so too. As I told Kitty, when you think of something, let me know, as I have no clue as to what he might like.
Interesting. And yet he accepted one from Mike. I'm not sure what that means, exactly, but it's still interesting.
I hope I don't, either.
That's good to know, though I think I would probably prefer not meeting him, in all honesty.
*amazed*
That's really remarkable. It's too bad he didn't like it. I can scarcely imagine that.
I see. Drusilla? The vampire? Yes, I have at that.

If he didn't want the limits, why would he even want a name? What do you mean by a name giving power and shape?
Actually, I didn't know that. And as I'm friends with Jack, after a fashion... Well. Maybe I should rethink this.
*watches, fascinated*
As I've said. Too bad.

Yes, I can understand that. Mike is very powerful in his own right, though I sometimes forget that. He's very unassuming.

Was I that obvious? Would you?
That's somewhat reassuring, I suppose. Here is fine, thank you.

I give you fair warning, she tends to be a little confusing.

Thank you. It's beautiful. Do I? I hadn't thought about it. Thank you for saying so.

Probably no more so than anyone else I've met recently.

Hm. Maybe I'll have to use my rugrat as an excuse to hear her tell one.
Mike is invited. Last I heard, Mike, like the rest of us, was wondering what the heck to get him. Though I heard something about snowglobes.

You're welcome, and thank you. And you're welcome again. *grins*

I can't tell you how relieved I am to hear that. I don't feel so bad now. Oh, snowglobes! What a marvellous idea. Too bad I didn't think of it.
*enthralled*
It's really lovely, Gina.
*laughs*
I'd better not say anything more!
*laughs again*
Indeed.
