DSGIUHIUDSHG. Asbel's and Sophie's relationship is just gorgeous!! The level of trust and understanding and loyalty and... and comfort between them is just... amazing and beautiful and dsiughdsig I love it! Whyyyy does the game insist on shipping him with Cheria? I mean, they're kind of cute in their own way, but... they have nowhere near as much ( Read more... )

"In fact, most characters are at their best when interacting with Sophie (including Cheria, who does act like a human being as long as Asbel isn't in her line of sight)."

THIS. A thousand times this! (God, I love Sophie!) You know, I really wanted to like Cheria. And, like you said, when she's not around Asbel or talking about him, I start to grow really fond of her; and theeen her Asbel-crazy starts to show. :/ I mean, the interaction between the three of them is very sweet sometimes. At the end of the adult arc, my thoughts were basically, as long as the Cheria/Asbel/Sophie trio stayed together, I was happy. I didn't care if it was Asbel/Cheria, Asbel/Sophie, or Cheria/Sophie, as long as they didn't all go their own ways, because they really do make a cute little family unit.

...Then I started the future arc. And within the first 20 or 30 minutes, especially seeing the interaction between Sophie and Absel, my brain had created its own headcanon, ahaha. I kind of split down two paths, either of which I'm happy with--Asbel/Richard or Asbel/Sophie--and I actually personally find a lot of support for either in the fact that Asbel became the Lord of Lahnt, and therefore needs an heir. He totally seems to me like the kind of person who would deny his own feelings for the greater good, and somehow I imagine that he had feelings for Sophie, but along the way he realized that it wouldn't work because she would never grow up and she can't give him any children. (I imagine she lamented the same thing, and this was part of why she was so eager to grow up, even though I know it was mostly because she didn't want to be left behind.) Same thing works with him and Richard; both men need an heir, and so unless Ephinea was very accepting of an adopted heir or something, that wouldn't be an acceptable option. So, whether Asbel had feelings for Richard or Sophie, I feel like they were dashed by the expectations of others, and so he settled for Cheria. I mean, why not? She's a good friend, it would make the others in the group happy, and it would help keep them all together.

Sorry for the tl;dr! I'm just really interested in hearing your perspective!! ♥

You know, I really wanted to like Cheria.
Yeah same. When her design came out, I was really excited for her. When her first fighting videos came out, I was HYPED.
And then I played.
And their relationship is everything that turns me off and squicks me, especially when it's presented as ~cute~ by the storyline (in contrast, Richard's stalking of Asbel when he's under Lambda's influence can be as creepy... but is presented as creepy. And thus doesn't turn me off so much, it's more of a "wow, it does say something that Richard mostly held it together until Asbel turned on him; because it shows his caring was still underneath the crazy. And then Lambda made him yan, and wow Richard did you manage to transfer your obsession to lambda himself?"). She's basically the female version of a Nice Guy, topped with abusiveness, and sorry, game, you're not going to sell me this as a happy, healthy relationship.
And it's especially jarring when she's a good mother figure with Sophie and a great character when she's interacting with Malik (their bickering is glorious, and she's the only one who ever manages to make him blush), so it basically comes down to the writers trying to shoehorn het romance into it... and I am REALLY questioning the writer's definition of romance.

As for the rest of your post, I personally can't see Asbel and Sophie as romantic, mostly because I can't see Sophie as romantic in a human sense. I do believe that there's a lot of love there, and that he's adopted her as a daughter or little sister, and they are very, very close.
My theories concerning his marriage with Cheria are split between "Malik got them drunk and shotgun wedding happened" and what you said yourself, though of it was just to get an heir I think Asbel would have gone for one of the noblewomen his mother keeps trying to match him with rather than draw his childhood friend into a loveless marriage. That being said, it's amusing, because it shows I DO care about Cheria somewhat to not want this to happen, otherwise I wouldn't really care. but yeah I personally think it would have been a lot better for her to go for someone else who actually takes her seriously instead of being oblivious to her. I could personally see it with Malik, but he's just one of many possibilities

I know, I love playing as her in battle, and she's so great in some of the skits and other scenes, but... yeah. Poor girl. :/ She had so much potential, and the writers kind of destroyed her for the sake of het romance.

Oh goodness, do not even get me started on the Asbel-Richard-Lambda dynamic. Absolutely brilliantly done, in my opinion. During the scenes in Telos Astue where each character communicates with Lambda, it just hit me all over again. This may be made void by whatever happens at the end of the future arc--not there yet--but if whoever ends up with Asbel has to put up with Lambda potentially every single time they touch... I just don't see Cheria as being able to handle that very well, for one thing, but given the ties that Lambda already has with Richard and Sophie... I feel like those two definitely have the most potential to be close with Asbel, in every sense of the word. Also--"wow Richard did you manage to transfer your obsession to lambda himself?"--yes. Yes, this. xD

I know what you mean about Sophie and romance. Like, in my head, I know that for a million reasons it wouldn't work out, but there's still that inexplicable "AAAA ♥" in all of their interaction for me. x3 Geez! When she's talking about how she'll carry on his legacy and make sure everyone learns of Asbel's dream, and then that look he gives her---!! Siuhdisuhg, LIN, it makes my heart so squish and love and dsiughidus ahhh! ;u; But I definitely know what you mean. And I think for that reason, even though I would love for them to get together, I really more see it as like... a potential romance that perhaps they both wanted, but never gets a chance to happen. There's very little logic behind it, even though I like to imagine how it would work into the storyline; it's just my heart. xD

So basically, that leaves me with Richard and Asbel as daddies, and Sophie as their daughter/sister/bffffff~ Ahaha. I just hate that, as King and Lord, they will probably be very busy and not be able to see each other very often. ;^;

Oh my gosh. Malik and Cheria would be AMAZING.

Also, just gonna throw this out there, that NOTHING MAKES ME HAPPIER THAN HUBERT/PASCAL WAT. Since we're on the topic xD

Ahaha Hubert/Pascal is cute but IT WAS SO RANDOM, like, you're told they like each other but nothing led to it??? Another "can be fun, but dear gods the writers suck at romance" things.

MALIK AND CHERIA WOULD BE BEAUTIFUL because he has the maturity she wants that Asbel doesn't and also isn't above calling her out on her bullshit, while she wouldn't tolerate HIS, and I think both would profit from someone to go "not so fast" ahaha.

And yes the Asbel/Sophie/Richard trio is just adorable, I want them to stay BFFs forever, man.

if whoever ends up with Asbel has to put up with Lambda potentially every single time they touch...
I'm now picturing this and lol'ing.
