Hello All--
Greetings from the land of no power! I heard we made the national news with 1.5 million people without power as of last night. We, however, lost power Thursday morning, well before everyone else. Highly unusual for us here in the Pacific NW, and highly unusual for where I live to have 2 outatges in a year, much less so close together.
I'm writing this from my friend's place in downtown Seattle-- one of the only places to currently have power-- who has kindly offered me her couch for the night. I can't really complain-- hot food, heat, tv, computer and movies to watch.
There is a GIANT tree cutting off the only road in and out of Maple Hills. The guy who lives next to it is being so kind and letting everyone drive through his property/driveway (literally less than 3 FEET from his front door) so that we all can get in and out of the neighborhood, but it's quickly becoming so messed up that if some of the holes get too deep, normal cars aren't going to be able to get through. The power company told us (and a lot of other people) don't bet on having our power back for a WEEK. No. Not kidding. Although apparently the power has come back to 3 miles away (trust me, this is a VAST improvement) so maybe a few days more? I so beyond wish that it won't take that long... We're worried that the neighborhood water tower will run out soon-- no power = no pump. There is no gasoline to be had anywhere-- either the stations have no gas or no power to run the tank pumps. Lines around the block when there's a station that does, and it's about to range down into uncivilized behavior.
Mom, the cats and I are doing alright so far-- we have some firewood stockpiled, a couple cases of water just in case, and some food. (although a hot meal would be SO nice right now...) She misses the tv, and I miss the internet and stove. Da likes having the fireplace so she can hide under it and being all toasty warm. It's mom's 50th birthday tomorrow, so we don't know what we're doing yet. It'd be a great present for us to get the power back. We try to keep ourselves busy, but it doesn't always work. We've had a lot of extra time on our hands. The neighbor has been so kind as to run 1 extension cord off his generator today-- so we have one power source. Charge cell phones, laptops, run the microwave occasionally.... :-D Holiday cards are on the list for soon, regardless of power situation.
Possible updates to come if I can rig dial-up on a charged laptop.
