Whenever I'd get depressed, I'd pick a song (usually relevant) that was extremely depressing and just listen to it on repeat while crying. New Years was usually depressing, so Thursday's "Jet Black New Year" would find its way to the top of the list. Last summer at home would get very cramped and depressing, "This Place is a Prison" by The Postal ( Read more... )

"This Place is a Prison" by The Postal Service got played a lot. Before any of that, when I had pretty limited exposure to music, "Adam's Song" by Blink182 would play a lot.

Whoah. Those were my exact picks back in the day. Oh man, we like sistas.

"The Queen of Detroit" - +/-

And then I found myself walking with the queen of Detroit
An audience with someone whose life I have not destroyed
But give me time and I can mess up anything at all
And I'll be fine after I take advantage of your fall

Mmmhmm.

I have entire God damned playlists, depending on what flavour of 'down' I'm in. Despondency, melancholy, bitter despair, hopeless despair, infuriated despair, self-pity, bitter suicidal, hopeless suicidal, infuriated suicidal... all sorts of shit. There are some songs I avoid listening to when I'm all right because they have such powerfule emotional content on their own and hence I've associated them permanently with torment ( ... )

Strange and Beautiful by Aqualung is a big one... that was Brandon's and I's song years ago.

There is a lot of them, I have a list saved somewhere. When I find it I'll post it.

When I was in 7th grade I listened to the instrumental love theme from Superman--from the soundtrack to the movie by John Williams--on repeat. And cried with the swelling of the violins and cellos. And then when I was a junior in high school (closeted, heterosexist violence & slurs in school, abusive parent, deaths in the family, medical drama, extreme depression) it was the entire soundtrack to Rent. Again and again, all day, every day, because it was SOOOO melodramatic.

Conversely, when I was all excited about leaving my hometown and going to college, I'd play "The shaming of the sun" album by the Indigo Girls, and any other angry lesbian hippie folk stuff, while cheerfully lifting weights in my bedroom.

Clearly, you are awesome.

When I was studying for finals last year, I had Melissa Etheridge, Natalie Merchant, and the Indigo Girls on shuffle - I called it "my angry lesbian motivational" music.
