[Well it was nice that the storm passed and Terry could finally get away from that creepy old building -- he was waiting for the cheap skeletons and Halloween theatrics to pop out at any second -- but he's been too exhausted to go back and explore what's beyond the fog. It's like he's had no energy for anything, even studying evidence ( Read more... )

That depends on the battery you have in mind, but the earliest batteries were made around 250 B.C., if I remember right.

[hey buddy, let's science together.]

Those are pretty primitive though. I mean I know this place isn't exactly techno savvy, but we don't see big jars full of vinegar laying around either.

I'd hope not. Still, knowing this place, I'd say we'd be lucky if we ended up with a zinc-carbon battery. [She misses her advanced tech. ;A; She misses it so hard.]

Or at least a windmill or two. I'm still trying to figure out how these communicator things work. These seem way more advance than what they're capable of too.

Retro, but not that retro.

I'm talking about the kinda stuff that shows up in markets sometimes, the ones people used to use at home.

So you mean either lithium or alkaline batteries, then. The earlier alkaline-based batteries were made in the 1800's, but they were perfected sometime in the early 1950's, I think. Lithium batteries started popping up in the 1970's.

Why would you need to know this, anyway? What'd you find?

A flashlight.

Really? Didn't think they'd have anything like that here. [It's nothing impressive, but it's more advanced than what she'd expect to find in this place.]

Me either.

It looks pretty out of place. It still works and everything.

Strange. Then again, it wouldn't be the first thing in this place that doesn't make any sense.

Mmm, true.

[Terry breaks off to yawn.]

I gotta bail. Think I'm coming down with something.

Sure thing. Take care of yourself.

[...Wait.]

Where'd you find the flashlight? A new building? [Max knows it's a stretch, but she's thinking back to Kevas mentioning finding something in a building and feeling sick right after he found it. Terry found a flashlight, and now he's feeling sick, too. It's probably a coincidence, but it'd be wise to make sure.]

Yeah. It was off the path, in the fog. The storm hit and we had to stay the night. I musta caught a cold or something.

Hm. It's probably a coincidence, but somebody I spoke to earlier went in that new building and found something, too. Said they started feeling sick after they found it - something about feeling really tired and everything taking twice as much effort.

That anything like what you're feeling?

Mmm. Something like that.

[Now it's got him thinking. Of course thinking was hard when he was this tired, but this had to be more than just coincidence.]

It'd probably be worth looking into. Earlier I suggested seeing if the people running this place knew anything about it, although there's no guarantee that they'll actually be helpful. [A point Kevas brought up, which seems relatively true if everything they've said and done before is anything to go by. Still, it couldn't hurt.]

From the sounds of it, though, you could probably use a nap first. [There's a hint of humour to her tone.]
