For those of you not familiar with Denver's Light Rail system, a little background. Near one of the stops for downtown Denver (the 16th and California stop, to be precise,) there is a restaurant where one of the employees almost invariably stands outside the entrance and waves to the passing Light Rail trains. In fact, this is such a regular occurrence that some of my friends and I would, at one time, joke about it.
One night, I was riding the Light Rail, and rather than ignore the person waving at the train I was on or comment about them with a fellow passenger, I decided to wave back. IMMEDIATELY this person brightened up, and began to wave significantly more vigorously. I was amazed at how so small an action as waving at someone could have such a profound impact on his mood. I guess that paying attention to people does work!
