Synopsis: Aoi is a grumpy salary man that has nothing to complain about. He has a great job, great friends, and an adorable boyfriend. He doesn’t realize his blessings until the entrance of a rival who threatens to take it all away.
Disclaimer: All I own are my sick, sick ideas. I wish I owned Gazette instead but then without sick ideas that wouldn’t be any fun, now, would it?
The screeching noise tore into Aoi’s peaceful slumber. He hauled his arm out from under Uruha’s sleeping form and moaned in pitiful exasperation as the numb limb flopped uselessly.
“I’ll get it,” Uruha mumbled. He switched off the alarm and sleepily nuzzled against Aoi, obviously with no intention of getting up. As tempting as all of this was, Aoi knew he had to get to work. His head ached dully. He usually didn’t drink as much alcohol as last night. Still, he fought the hangover and stumbled into the bathroom to take a shower.
The warm water was a welcoming sensation. It relaxed muscles stiff from a night spent on one position as well as a night spent in many ‘positions’. Aoi reached for the shampoo and lathered up his hair. He paid special attention to his hairline. But then, why did he still feel scrubbing at the back of his head? A smile crept onto this face. Uruha…
“So you actually did get up.”
“Yeah, I have something that I thought you might be able to help me with.”

Even after adding ‘screw Uruha into the wall’ to his schedule, Aoi still managed to get to work early and he was feeling pretty darn proud of himself. Today looked like it might go all right. He caught sight of his boss farther down the street, no doubt going to unlock the office doors. He sped up, hoping to meet his superior at their mutual destination.
He hurried past the last building, dashed up the steps to the door and froze. Who was that? Some brown-haired guy he didn’t recognize beat him to the door.
“Well Uke-san, it would seem you’ll be a fine addition to the company. I like your work ethic! Usually Shiroyama-san arrives here first. Oh! There he is!” The boss took notice of Aoi’s approach. “Shiroyama-san, this is Uke Kai. This is his first day with us. I hope you will show him how we do things here.” Then he addressed the new guy, “Shiroyama-san is our best worker. You can learn a lot from him.”
The boss finished unlocking the door and set off toward his office. The two remaining men locked eyes. “I hope you’re up for some healthy competition, Shiroyama-san,” Kai said with a sly grin. The expression looked out of place on the otherwise open, inviting face. Aoi just stared for a moment, trying to comprehend the abrupt change. In the end, he decided to ignore the challenge. His boss gave him instructions and he must follow them. “Come along Uke-san. I’ll show you around the office.”

“Come on, Aoi,” Ruki urged for the umpteenth time.
“No,” Aoi grunted. “I have work to do.”
Aoi didn’t want to admit, even to himself, the reason for his fervent efforts. In his heart of hearts, he knew that the desire to outshine Kai drove his actions. The newcomer was currently the center of a laughing circle at the far end of the office. The other workers seemed to adore Kai already. Aoi new he didn’t have that kind of charisma but he could get ahead by working harder. The way he saw it, Kai was wasting time and giving him a window to get more work done. With any luck, the boss would realize the slacker-like behavior in Aoi’s rival and call him out in front of everyone.
“Come on,” Ruki repeated.
Aoi knew Ruki wanted him to join the chatting group but he just couldn’t. He felt like if he did, Kai would win and he couldn’t let that happen.
“Don’t you have work too?” Aoi responded, trying to keep his voice steady.
“No. I finished today’s tasks an hour ago. Either you’re really slow or you’re trying to show up our newbie. I have a sneaking suspicion which it is.”
“Yes, okay, I’m doing next week’s work but that’s not the point. We’re paid to work not to chatter.”
Ruki sighed. “Well, at least join us after work. Reita and I asked Kai to go the bar with us. You could even ask Uruha to come along. What better way to make Kai jealous of you than to show off your smokin’ hot boyfriend?”
Aoi gave this some consideration. “What if he’s a homophobe?”
“He’s not. Trust me,” Ruki laughed.
Aoi frowned. “What makes you so sure?”
“Maybe because he’s groped my ass at least three times already.”
Curiosity got the better of him and Aoi surreptitiously stole a peek at Ruki’s behind.
“Ha, your ass is kinda nice. I never noticed before,” he mused.
Ruki smirked. “So will you come along?”
“Yeah. I’ll call Uruha. He should be home by now.”
Aoi’s stomach was doing flip-flops. Kai would be so jealous when Uruha strode in looking stunning as always. He snatched up the phone and dialed his home number. The other end of the line barely rang once before Uruha’s deep voice greeted him.
“Uruha, it’s Aoi.”
“Hey, why are you calling me from work?”
“I’m going out with some guys from the office this evening and I wondered if you’d like to come.”
“Really!? Where? When?”
Aoi smiled. He could practically hear Uruha’s smile through the phone. He gave the location and a time half an hour before he actually expected Uruha to show up. Uruha took mental note and the two bade each other goodbye.
“Do you really think we’ll be out of here that early?” Ruki asked regarding the time Aoi gave.
“I love Uruha dearly, but that man has no sense of time. It’s a wonder he ever gets to work on time. He’ll probably still arrive late as it is.”
“Ah, I get it. I guess I’ll leave you to your work. I have a date with Tetris.”
After Ruki returned to his cubicle, Aoi muttered, “Yeah, that’s all you have a date with. Ah, shit!”
Ruki’s stapler clattered onto Aoi’s desk.

The small group arrived at the appointed location. As expected, Uruha was nowhere to be seen.
“So Aoi, where’s this super hot boyfriend?” Kai inquired.
Aoi glared at Ruki and Reita. Reita sent an accusing glace in Ruki’s direction. Ruki shrugged.
“He’ll be here,” Aoi replied confidently. “He’s more than sexy but not very punctual.”
Before the other could rebut his argument, he headed up to the bar and ordered a shot of tequila. He’d show Kai who was the real man here. The others followed suit and ordered.
“Aoi!” Reita whispered. “What are you doing? You’ve never had tequila in your life.”
“I have to show Kai that I’m a real man.” Aoi whispered back, as much to remind himself of his motivations as to explain them to Reita. Since when did a shot look so big?
“I can’t believe you’re going to drink that,” Ruki muttered as he sipped his Malibu pineapple.
Aoi took a deep breath in preparation for the burning sensation that most surely awaited his throat, but when he was about to raise the glass, it disappeared from his hand. His eyes flicked to his left just in time to see Uruha down the shot without a second thought. Aoi didn’t think he’d ever been happier to see the gorgeous blonde and he did look gorgeous.
“How considerate of you to order a drink for me, Aoi,” Uruha chirped before ordering some vodka. Aoi just ordered beer, feeling incredibly lucky. He also didn’t miss the opportunity to check out Uruha’s perfect butt and thighs, that his shorts did little to hide. Apparently, he realized that Aoi intended to show him off. He’d paired the shorts with a simple t-shirt, natural make-up, and stylishly tousled hair, making his beauty seem effortless. Aoi almost wished he was wearing the same thing as he dabbed sweat from his forehead. Wearing a suit in the middle of a Tokyo summer was not the least bit comfortable. It was then that Aoi noticed Kai staring openly at Uruha. He let a triumphant grin touch his lips before sauntering over to his rival, sipping his beer nonchalantly.
“Kai, this is my boyfriend, Takashima Uruha. Uruha…Uruha!”
“Huh? What?”
“Uruha, this is Uke Kai. This was his first day of work. I’ll be guiding him through his start here.”
Uruha flashed one of his huge, dazzling smiles and bowed respectfully.
“It’s a pleasure to meet you, Kai. I know you’ll do well here. Aoi’s a great person to learn from.”
Kai offered a radiant smile of his own and returned the bow.
“Thank you, Takashima-san. I’m sure anyone with someone as lovely as you supporting him would be the best there is at whatever he endeavors.”
“Oh, I’m not that wonderful,” Uruha giggled nervously. “You can call me Uruha, by the way. ‘Takashima-san’ makes it sound like I’m my father.”
“Alright then, Uruha, but you really are that wonderful.”
Aoi’s heart skipped a beat when Kai leaved forward and kissed Uruha on the cheek, sending Aoi a challenging stare as his did so. Then the slim brunette headed to the bar to get a drink. Aoi dashed over to Uruha as if the man would run off if he didn’t. He unconsciously held his breath. What would Uruha’s face reveal? Would it wear a dumb, love struck expression as Aoi feared?
No. Uruha looked thoroughly baffled. Aoi’s sudden arrival seemed draw the blonde out of his thoughts.
“Aoi? Does Kai come from Brazil or something? His Japanese is really good.”
Relief flooded over Aoi and he chuckled feeling immensely grateful for Uruha’s intermittent cluelessness.
“No, Uruha. He just thinks you’re really hot and he wants to steal you from me.”
“Ooooooh, okay. I won’t cause an international incident then.” Uruha proceeded to wipe at his cheek with the back of his hand and mutter something about passing the flu.
Having regained some of his security, Aoi left Uruha to chat with Ruki and approached Kai again.
“What’s that you’re drinking?” he asked.
“Soda,” Kai replied evenly. “I believe that drinking intoxicating beverages isn’t very classy. It just makes you act like an idiot. Don’t you think so, Aoi?” Aoi didn’t miss Kai’s glance at the beer in his hand.
“I’ve hardly finished half of this beer,” Aoi snapped, “I hardly think that qualifies me as impaired.”
“Your temper suggests otherwise.” Kai finished his soda and walked off to the bathroom, leaving Aoi to seethe.
Reita, noticing his friend’s distress, asked what the matter was. Aoi poured out the whole story, pacing and gesturing animatedly, stopping only to yell at Ruki to shut up so Uruha could pee and stop his full 5 min of whining. Reita listened patiently despite that fact that he saw most of it himself in the first place. His audience gone, Ruki listened to Aoi’s tirade as well, taking a seat and sipping his drink as though he were watching a film. By now, the two were very used to their friend’s infamous temper tantrums. However, they were not prepared from when Aoi stopped mid-sentence and stared at his watch.
“Hey guys,” he started anew. “It’s been 10 minutes. Are those two alright in there?”
Ruki and Reita glanced from their watches to the bathroom door and back to their watches. Just then Kai walked out.
“Hey, is Uruha alright?” Reita asked, concerned.
“He’s had a little too much to drink but he’ll be fine,” Kai replied.
Aoi narrowed his eyes. Kai looked awfully self-satisfied. Had he seduced Uruha after all?
Just then, Uruha joined their group.
“Are you okay, darling?” Aoi put his arm around Uruha and to his surprise, Uruha shrank away and exchanged a look with Kai.
“I’m fine.”
Aoi felt sick with betrayal. “Do you want to go home? He asked resignedly.
“Yeah,” Uruha mumbled.
Aoi hastily waved goodbye to the others and left.
The walk back to the apartment was silent. Aoi knew he was being irrational. Uruha did have 6 shots in a very short amount of time. He probably wasn’t feeling well. Still, he couldn’t shake the feeling that he’d somehow lost Uruha tonight. Uruha stared at the sidewalk the entire time.
Aoi found himself thinking, “That’s right. You should feel guilty you little whore.” He kicked a stone and watched Uruha’s eyes follow it. He tried to rationalize with himself. He was being overly accusing. When they finally reached their apartment, Aoi felt a little better.
He took Uruha’s chin in his hand and raised it so he could see his beloved’s face. Uruha’s brown eyes nervously darted about, looking at everything but Aoi. Aoi was not about to be deterred. He leaned forward and kissed Uruha’s neck. Again, the blonde shrank away.
“I’m going to shower and go to bed.”
Then he was gone, leaving Aoi in the middle of their living roon with nothing but his doubts.
