Hey people!

The Singapore International Jewelry Expo (SIJE) 2023 was back for its 18th run at Marina Bay Sands Convention Centre recently. I wasn't available to attend SIJE last year, so this year marks my first experience!

Held between 13 to 16 July, this 4-day event plays host to more than 280 jewellers, manufacturers and exporters from 28 countries. It was the only time I was surrounded by so many expensive and exquisite jewellery in one place.

Some of the highlights that had happened on this stage include:

i) Jewellery fashion shows presented by Bank of Indonesia and the jewellers at the Indonesian Pavilion;

ii) Fashion designer showcase by the International Women's Federation of Commerce and Industry Singapore (IWFCI Singapore); and

iii) Jewellery Appreciation Workshops conducted by the founders of Carat 55

I was invited to attend a Jewellery Appreciation Workshop by Carat 55. Was a tad surprised that the workshop was held on stage! Thankfully, we didn't have much of an audience.

Carat 55 is a bespoke fine wedding jeweller in Singapore along Pickering Street, known for their minimal, elegant and finely crafted jewellery. During the workshop, we were shown multiple trays of beautiful gemstones in various sizes, and were asked to pick one main gemstone and some smaller gemstones to create our own jewellery design.

The main gemstone that stood out for me was Aquamarine. I was totally attracted by how sparkly it was and its gorgeous blue.

Subsequently, I was spoilt for choice and didn't know what would match Aquamarine. I decided to google for my birthstones, and it turned out to be Sapphire and Moonstone for September babies. Worked out well in the end because the navy blue of Sapphire and the translucent white of Moonstone complemented Aquamarine tremendously.

We could choose to create earrings, necklaces or bracelets. Since I'm no designer or artist, I figured I would start with something simple like a earring.

I was taught to draw the shape of a ear on paper so that I could assemble my gemstones around it and see if I like the design. Gotta say that it was mega difficult to pick the small stones with my tweezer, and I spent most of the time nudging them around instead. I was very careful not to lose any of them since I was handling gemstones that are worth thousands in value. After assembling my gemstones with as much precision as I could, I finally landed on the above design and named it 'Cinderella'. What do you think? :)

After the workshop, we were brought to Carat 55's exhibition booth to check out their jewellery designs.

Just look at how sparkly and intricate their earrings were! I am loving the long dangly earring with a mix of blues and pinks. The experts really know how to match colours! They even had some cutsie necklaces depicting symbols of girls and boys. Definitely caught our attention.

Overall, what an eye-opening and educational experience, especially for someone like me who doesn't own much fine jewellery aside for my engagement ring and wedding band.

That said, if you're planning for engagement or getting married soon, go check out Carat 55's store on Pickering Street. May you find the jewellery of your dreams there!
