Chanko Oden opens new Takeaway Kiosk at IMM Outlet Mall

Hey people!

Fans of oden, anyone?

If you are, you might have eaten at Chanko Oden, which has an outlet at Bugis Street, and sells Japanese oden ingredients for as low as $1.50.

Oden is a Japanese one-pot dish which involves simmering ingredients in a light dashi broth. Sometimes, it is served as appetisers in Japanese restaurants.

I've never eaten oden before even though I've seen people eating or talking about it. With Chanko Oden's opening of their takeaway kiosk at IMM outlet mall, I figured that I should have my first oden experience in my life.

Chanko Oden strives to create the best oden broth in Singapore.

Their broth is meticulously brewed for hours using high quality ingredients, and flavoured with kombu, bonito flakes and sake. No wonder the broth is so flavourful and comes with that umami kick - I love it!

You may order a minimum of 3 items (for free soup!) on their list, each of which comes with their own price tag.

Majority of the ingredients are in the $1.50 to $2.00 range. I know it leaves people spoilt for choice, so it's helpful to look out for items tagged as 'popular' or 'low calorie option'. Hubby and I picked mainly the popular items to try. There's also Udon noodles selling at $4.00 if you want to have a more filling meal.

My eyes lit up when I saw Japanese sweet potatoes ($2.90).

As a huge fan of sweet potatoes, I certainly could not resist getting one to try! They are limited in their quantity for the day so get them when you see them!

There were no seats near the takeaway kiosk, so Hubs and I had to walk to another part of IMM Outlet Mall (nearer to McDonald's) where there were seats.

Fortunately, we didn't have to walk around cautiously holding our warm and soupy Oden bowls. We were given caps to secure our bowls, as well as plastic bags to carry our bowls conveniently.

Here's a snapshot of all the ingredients we've tried (and their prices):

1. Chanko ($1.50)
2. Fish Cake ($2.00)
3. Korean Fish Cake ($1.50)
4. Chicken Cheese Ball ($2.00)
5. White Radish ($1.50), Fish Roe Lucky Bag ($2.00) and Beancurd Puff ($1.50)
6. Taiwan Sausage ($2.00)

The memorables one were the Fish Cake and the Korean Fish Cake, which were tasty and complemented the broth wonderfully. I personally also enjoyed the Chicken Cheese Ball and wished we have ordered more of it. I was slightly disappointed with the Taiwan Sausage though - it wasn't as flavourful as I expected it to be.

Interestingly, our favourite food at Chanko Oden was their sweet potatoes. It had that tantalizing roasted fragrance when you open it, and it was not exceedingly sweet. My hubby, who usually doesn't enjoy sweet potatoes, ate half of it and complimented its taste. What a surprise!
