Don't you see how a single comment now gets so much traction? The fact that 4 words can make you a national icon (usually in these cases, infamous icons) shows how connected the world is and that the argument that "1 person cannot make a difference" is now technically invalid! We have all opportunity to be seen/heard on the internet; used wisely and the potential is limitless.
Now more importantly, Zheng Huiting has actually did a national service. No, there is no grammatical error whatsoever in the previous sentence. Her blunder united the entire (almost) male population to speak up about the pangsai they went through during their own time serving the nation. This is something mrbrown.com / temasek review / onlinecitizen / THE GARMENTS COMBINED, can ever possibly imagine or even wish to do to the local community in a week. The point that I can even mention this girl's name (of whom I have no clue of) here is evidence of the immensity of her 4 words. The ripples are amazing; to see the an admin clerk who (most probably) enjoyed air-con for a year serving, rally alongside regulars who led a hundred men on overseas missions is very encouraging indeed. And now there's even a girl (who did ns?) also speaking up!
The point is: It takes an error made by 1 person, to ultimately change everything. Humans don't learn very well all the time to do good just because it is right to do so. They learn to do good because it hurts so bad, to do bad. Punishment in this sense, is therefore validated.
My mere few years of getting to know in this world tell me that the greatest thing to change the big things, are really in the small things and this event proves that non-cooperative competition is a total waste of time (my assignment topic therefore introduces the ideal of reciprocal altruism which is terribly difficult to start off, but has great potential in a cell group introduction). People naturally will deviate (due to so many reasons) and although there is an idealistic route which can actually happen, few will bother to do it right. The cost to be on the losing end is just too great to bear.

So, I see it like this: That the only way forward is for people to speak up! Never stay silent, never hold back a wonderful thought that could really make people see things differently. Of course the saying that empty vessels make the most noise still holds true nonetheless. Scapegoats are also a horrid thing, but they help the community in so many ways untold. Maybe she was a whipping girl, but that's just a wild assumption, hahaha.
What I'd love to see: People in all loving kindness, with no false pretences, no fear, and in all humility, to share/think/discuss/debate/talk/learn in any community; be it in a small class/group or nation/country/world. It sounds tough, but like we saw, it just takes one.
