i had a weird revelation today

Dec 03, 2005 21:20

i don't entirely believe in the notion of completely free will
what do i believe? i don't know
but i do believe it is a fallacy to think that we are completely in control of ourselves, our minds and our bodies 100% of the time.
this revelation was spawned by a discussion of spectatorship and agency relating to 'new media' (i dont believe in that either). we were discussing how one can never be outside of ideology and why we want to be so very much...

i also had the revelation recently that all of my knowledge and skill is relatively useless. my friend can go to her brother who is in dentistry school and get her teeth cleaned and whitened. my brother is going to give my car a tune up.
what services do i have to offer? philosophical ponderings? film analysis? a semi-complete history of film, television and the aforementioned 'new media'?

yup, i'm spending my livelihood and my money (and future money) so that i can do something relatively useless as a career and teach other people to do the same. whoah academia is a weird place.
